Title: Belly fat/Lipo ?
Post by: paintedroom on September 12, 2016, 02:13:30 pm
I`m 36 days in on Genvoya and seem to have acquired a belly.I have been eating well,no alcohol and exercise 4 days a week.I ventured into this section thinking i would obviously find a number of people addressing this issue but am surprised at the actual number.I asked the Doctor at the outset if Lipodystrophy was to be expected,he said it rarely happens on Genvoya or the newer drugs.I wonder is it a regular feature of all HIV drugs ?

Thanks,P.

Hi

Lipodystrophy would not be expected with the modern class of drugs as your Doc has also stated.

However i would expected weight gain starting treatment if you started treatment late and your body is in the process of fighting and healing. This should settle, no need to worry just keep an eye on it for a few months would be my thinking.

Jim

Even if it were a feature of modern meds (and it isn't), it wouldn't happen that quickly anyway.

The weight gain is almost certainly connected with metabolism changes now your body doesn't have to constantly fight a virus. Even then 30 days is a short time frame, so it could even be a psychological thing based on hyper-vigilance due to a fear of lipo. That may sound strange, but I've convinced myself of one or two subtle body changes following treatment until my gf reminds me that I was like that beforehand too!

I think Jim's suggestion to wait a few months and monitor is probably the best path

yes sometimes my beauty frightens me ;)..  which is to say scrutinising your body too closely can produce psychosomatic daftness.
Makes perfect sense that i gain weight now that my body doesn`t  have to work two jobs(or at least close to working only one).

Thanks to both Jim and cavey as always.I hope there`s a place that you both get to air your own concerns and worries. Can`t always be one way traffic.

Hope all well,P.

Is the belly fat you are gaining visceral or subcutaneous fat?

@Tonny - Bkkkevins distinction is the answer.Hope all well with you.

@BKKKevin..it`s hard to tell but it`s not the hard consistency talked about by those suffering Lipo.It may have been partly psychosomatic and partly for reasons given above(gain in weight from body not having to fight so hard).I checked first thing this morning and was definatley flatter.I`m going to lower those pesky complex carbs and see where it takes me.

Thanks to all,P.

Hi P,
I would agree with your doctor, the newer meds would not be the cause of lipo , also
it doesn't come on that quickly . It tends to show up years down the road and there is a pattern with some of us who were on the early meds.
I suspect you will never face any lipo problems at all , you will just grow old and get a little portly  :) That's just a normal part of life   ;)

Be Well , Wade
