Death Comes to Philly
« on: October 24, 2012, 08:32:14 pm »
Please send Mr. Darcy (not Bitchywumpy!) to my rescue! A hurricane is going to slam the Delaware Bay and hit Philadelphia in five days. Don't believe me -- well, check out the forecast model:

And here is the 80mph wind prediction:

Folks from DC to Boston should pay attention over the coming days, as modeling is subject to change. They're saying this could be the "Storm of the Century" and as an arctic front is coming down from Canada at the same time it will cause the western side of this tropical storm to be snow, while the rest of it will be rain.

They are comparing the possible scenario to the "Perfect Storm" of October 1991.

We are under a Tropical Storm watch here - bit windy outside - but it feels good - cools it off somewhat - still have work tomorrow....

It looks like I left Boston at the right time.  Last years winter was mild from what I was told.  I think we had something like 9 inches of snow.  Well you better dig in, that sounds like it's going to be a mess.

If I remember correctly, the 1991 storm brought huge snow storms.  And, wasn't there a huge increase in births, due to the huge pressure changes?

That storm affected the midwest too.  We started building our house that Fall and we didn't have it livable before the storms hit.  We were staying in the camper  while building and the winds slid it around.  I remember that it scared the holy shit out of me.  And cold, jeebus.

It must have affected our weather too as we had a horrible weather pattern that winter.

This hurricane just made a direct hit as a category-3 on the second largest city in Cuba about 30 minutes ago. This morning it wasn't even a hurricane.

Batton down the hatches, Mitchiepoo. I don't want anything to happen to my new Connecticut lover. Hey, do you live anywhere near swanky Westport? My bestestbestest friend owns a restaurant there called Tarry Lodge, directly south of the turnpike on Charles and Franklin Street. You should go -- best Italian food. I ate there back in April. Great artisanal pizza (recommend the guanciale w/ Black Truffles & Egg), Octopus with potatoes and pepper insalate, fritto Misto w/ Calamari, Scallops & Rock Shrimp, duck breas w/ Celery Root, Brussels Sprouts & Pears. I should come up and dine with you sometime!

Dearest Miss Peepoo,

unfotunately, i do not live near swanky Westport. but i do live in beautiful semi-swanky middlesex county in East Haddam along the connecticut river.

it is the proud home of the nationally famous Goodspeed Opera House.

the pizza you described sounds great! yum!!!

we DO own a wonderful kitchen store in Old Saybrook (home of Katie Hepburn), and yes, i was lucky enough to have met and spoke to her before her untimely death at the age of 90 something.
we (my partner and i) also have a well equipted kitchen in the shop where we hire top notch chefs for our cooking classes.
i think this would be right up your alley.

i will PM you our web link as i know that advertizing is not allowed on these forums.

W.C. Fields has just announced that if Philadelphia closes down during the hurricane since he has already experienced that ;) he will be down to reopen the place.  Of course the city elders will have to erect a statue of him which I am sure has always been under consideration. :)

Anyway isn't the city of brotherly lust landlocked enough, I mean the water between Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey isn't exactly a huge body.  Now the Rockaways in NYC, or Fire Island or the Hamptons are wide open for a hit.

Do go safe early next week all my friends on the east coast and stock up on goodies and necessities!

This storm's been dubbed "Frankenstorm" and the estimated damage to be had is $1 billion. This is gonna be a mother.

MissP -- stash some grub and stay inside. Do not plan to trick-or-treat -- yeah, we know you don't have to dress up and it would be fun, but you might be blown...well, you would not mind that -- oh, I meant to write blown down the sidewalk.

The current track shows it hitting the Delaware Bay Hurricane strenght at high tide which would force the ater 90 miles up to Philadelphia. Where that happens is the key. If it occurs near the Delaware Bay, the Philadelphia region could be in for an all-out disaster, experiencing the storm's maximum effects.

And now here comes the inevitable hyperbole in the media with terms like "Frankenstorm".   ::)   I'm not dismissing the seriousness of the storm, but The Weather Channel and AccuWeather and other forecasters do have a vested interest in creating hyping this storm.  A little more information like this on how to be prepared for a hurricaine would be a lot more valuable:

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php

Then there are the inevitable pundits who predict how this will affect the election.  Now, if certain states were to choose to postpone elections, as some have the power to do, that could make the election even uglier.

Oh please, you guys get one hurricane every like 20 years..lol.  Having lived in Florida for 40+ years this was a common occurrence.  Actually, not having a hurricane was quite rare for us.

This looks nasty though, I hope you're prepared.

need I remind you Sunshine State yokels that the Northeast is the most densely populated part of North America. APPLES TO ORANGES.

Aanywa, the lame hurricanes in Florida hit Homestead where nobody lives, and then expect Yankees to cough up money to pay for trailer parks because you won't force proper zoning laws on all of those senior citizens. Cary me a river.

 :P  http://www.hulu.com/watch/290052

We're having a breezy day here today.  No rain at all, any rain at this point is staying to the east of Orlando.

http://www.baynews9.com/content/news/baynews9/news/article.html/content/news/articles/bn9/2012/10/26/hurricane_sandy_s_ou.html

Barometer has fallen from 30.00 inches to 29.74 inches. The highest wind gust we've had was 28.8 MPH, and that was within the last hour. We're early voting tomorrow ,so we will probably be standing outside in a long line at the Clearwater courthouse.

The weekend's looking pretty good here, compared to what will be going on up there!

Here in New York I stocked up on necessities for the hurricane, for example I went to Martha's country bakery in Forest Hills and bought a chocolate mousse cake with strawberries and blackberries on top.  The nice young man who waited on me asked if I wanted seven inches or eight?  I thought: He can do that?!?  Anyway he meant the circumference of the cake of course and I went large, although seven inches is usually more than adequate. :)

BTW- Cost: 29 dollars, I kid you not!

Jody :) :) :)

Folks are going nuts here in Richmond -- I would not go anywhere near a grocery store right now.  We are good on food, water and batteries anyway.
In the 12 years in this house, we've never lost power for more than 30 mins, so not too concerned there.  Hoping the 2 giant trees in our front yard make it through.  Otherwise, just planning on hanging tight at home -- the kindle is all charged up, so might be do a bit of reading in the coming days.

Hope everyone stays safe.

Mike

So you went for 8 inches at 29? and you have some soup, water and crackers for when the cake party ends?

Mary please, you're barely in the cone unless you're east of Stamford.

but p., they keep moving the cone. this morning we were in the cone and the northeast quadrant is known to have the worst winds.

also, do you really have that many trees to topple onto power lines in Philly??
i think not sugarpie. ;)
