Vaginal Fluid Transmission
« on: May 19, 2011, 04:27:30 pm »
Hi,

Two nights ago I stupidly eneded up in a lap dancing bar. The dancer fingered her vagina during one such dance and then brushed the same finger over my lips also touching the tip of my tongue. I am now wondering whether this was an HIV infection opportunity?

Can someone tell me if I have had a risk, low risk or no risk? I am suspecting risk as I have read that vaginal fluid carries the virus. Presumably it could have transferred from my tongue and penetrated membranes in my mouth or gums?

Appreciate any insight you can offer. Apologies if there are other threads with the same circumstance. I did hav a look but didn't find anything.

At no time were you ever at risk of contracting HIV in the situations you've provided. HIV is unable to reproduce outside its living host (unlike many bacteria or fungi, which may do so under suitable conditions), except under laboratory conditions; therefore, it does not spread or maintain infectiousness outside its host.

You also need to know that the only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse.

As long as you consistently use condoms for those activities you will be well protected against HIV.

Sorry for the follow-up question as I know this is an HIV forum. Based on what I have described does anyone have any idea of risk for Syphilis, Gonorrhea, etc?

We do focus on HIV here.

I wouldn't consider what you have described as indicative of risk for other STDs. But if you have any throubling symptoms then discuss them with your doctor. We can't diagnose anything in this setting.

We can tell you that you were not at risk for HIV. Period.

After having been reassured by previous posts I am panicking after having had flu like symptoms - temp, sore throat bad cough with green phlegm, blocked sinuses, etc 8 days after this exposure. Can I still assume this incident was zero risk as opposed to low risk and that my symptoms are purely coincidental?

Whilst I understood the argument that transfer from hand to mouth wasn't possible due to environmental damage to the virus I wondered if there was a time limit i.e. If the transfer happens in a second or less would the virus not still be intact?

Appreciate any further reassurance you can give. Thought I had managed to put this behind me until those symptoms appeared.

Between here and the grave you are going to experience lots of symptoms in your lifetime. That doesn't change have the science-based evaluation of your recent situation of concern. You were not at risk.

Your symptoms have nothing to do with HIV. If they persist you should discuss them with your doctor.

This is not an HIV situation. Period.
