Hi Everybody,

Someone in my family had just been tested positive HIV. It was due to neurosyphilis that he was admitted to hospital, I read online and that if there's an opportunistic infection like neurosyphilis it would be developed to AIDS.

Currently my uncle is in a mental hospital and is in a very bad shape. He's refusing to take his meds and food, all he wanna do is to sleep whole day and he is very temperamental. Sometimes he just talk and laugh to himself ..

He did his MRI and the doc mentioned that his brain has shrank, I've read that it's something like dementia.

Due to some infectious disease act, the doc couldn't tell us more. I'm very worried and guilty as I wasn't being very kind to him as he always made us angry over the last few months.  :'(

Hi delirium.

The reason the doctor wouldn't tell you more is a very basic one. Unless there is informed consent to share medical information it is illegal for a doctor to share medical information with anyone who is not part of a professional care team. This law is there to protect patients.

Your uncle is not his medical conditions. He is still your uncle it's just that with brain conditions sometime the people we love act in ways that make us uncomfortable.

If you uncles truly has no capacity to make treatment decisions ( there's a faily high bar for this) it may be possible for a court to appoint a family member or other close friend to have the power of 'medical attorney', that is the appointed person could make decisions about treatment.

Don't do too much reading on the net, you'll drive yourself crazy.

Give yourself a hug.
