Today we were at a friends house and my boyfriend, who is hiv+, got bit by their large great dane dog., several times. Twice on his side and once in the butt. It was an unprovoked attack, and they said she never did anything like that before. He has several bite puncture wounds and bruises on his side and a 3 inch gash on his butt. He refused to go to the hospital, and kinda downplayed the whole thing so his friend wouldn't feel bad, but I could tell he was in pain. He did clean the wounds with peroxide. I've talked him into calling the dr. in the morning, but my questions are...Should he get a tetanus shot? And should he be put on an antibiotic to prevent infection? How much more of a chance is there that he could get an infection because of the hiv?

He has to see a doctor to clean the wounds and guide the treatment.
You have to know if the dog is vaccinated - since these are your friends, you have to trust them but its probably better if you ask to see papers. Otherwise, the doc may well recommend rabies shots.
Not sure we can comment on the HIV aspect without knowing the state of your bf's immune system.

Also shouldn't the dog be destroyed.
You can't have dogs attacking people unprovoked. What if next time, it's a child.

Got him to the dr, and he got a tetanus shot, and he put him on an antibiotic for a week. The dr. couldn't believe how bad it was, and told him he shouldve went to the hospital yesterday. Anyway, the dr. said he has to report the dog bite to the police, I guess its the law. So, I'm not sure whats going to happen with the dog. I feel bad because they're good friends of ours, and they told us the dog has all of its shots, so we don't have to worry about rabies, but this was a vicious attack. I thought the same thing you did carousel, what if it wouldve attacked a child like that?

Hate to note it, but it's also possible the dog's bitten before and the owner doesn't want to come clean. People love their animals even when they misbehave. Sorry it happened. When I was a kid, a German Shepherd bit me in the neck, unprovoked. They were good friends of ours. They had a bunch of kids and said goodbye to the dog.
