Well for pity's sake!
« on: June 27, 2007, 12:52:48 am »
I was munching on a nice barbecue rib this evening when, all of a sudden, there was a decided cracking sound in my mouth.

Yep, I broke a tooth - on a barbecue rib, no less!   :'(

So, tomorrow, I will put in a call to the dentist. Probably mean a pulled tooth and a bridge.

Oh well, it could be worse. At least it wasn't a front tooth.

GUMMINGLY YOURS,

Mark

Yea, I sympathize. My mouth is beginning to be a patchwork of real and fake.  I started breaking teeth a number of years ago.  My first was on an olive pit in a pasta salad. Last time I put "salad olives" in a salad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I barbecued ribs for supper last night.  Fortunately I didn't have the same problem as you. I don't think there is anything I dislike more than going to the dentist.  Good Luck!!!

I lost two teeth watching Kung fu while chomping on an apple.  I was 7, ..... it was the 70's.

Sorry, good  luck at the dentist.

Another thought-  I was inspired to start a new thread about "our bad experiences at the dentist" but figured I would wait until Mark arrived safely from tooth replacement.

I had that happen to me last year and I had to get my first crown done.  Thank goodness I'm HIV+ and impoverished because I get totally free high quality dental treatment courtesy of University of Pennsylvania Dental School.  The actual dentists are NOT students, only the hygienists, etc. are and it seems this one particular clinic there focuses on HIV+ patients, I guess simply to train people on how to handle people with infectious diseases.

I was surprised it didn't particularly hurt, though I must say having to keep my mouth open extra wide for a solid hour was not enjoyable.

I went through a phase of breaking teeth about three years ago.  It was always around Thanksgiving or Christmas.  I broke two on peanut M&M's (one tooth per year for two years) of all things.  I have dental insurance, but even with that a crown costs me around $375.  Over the past 20 years, I've had a total of seven crowns thanks, in part, to (large) fillings disintegrating.  The good thing is that I now have many fewer fillings.  I hope the dentist trip is ok.  Maybe instead of an extraction - even the word makes me feel nervous - you can get a crown.  It's less obtrusive in the long run, but more cost and aggravation up front.

I actually suck at deep throating... that's why I flip over so easy and just collect tolls for the Holland Tunnel.  Seems like less effort to me frankly once you can master a large dildo and a bottle of poppers (please be careful with the KS though!)

Sorry to hear about the tooth issues, Mark. But as you said, at least it wasn't one of the fronts...that would have added untold emotional devastation  to an embarrassment (at least to me).

My loathing of dentistry has been mentioned before. Why in this day and age must it still resemble intel-gathering at Gitmo more than a minor medical procedure?

I don't get why everybody hates the dentist so much.  They give you goofy gas and everything.  Wish my regular doctor would do that.

I used to have a gay dentist that always played Barbra Streisand during our sessions.

Anyway, I always load up on klonopin before a dental excursion.  Sometimes I even fall asleep in the chair and they yell at me.

Well, the tooth isn't too painful and I have an appointment with the dentist July 6.

I might be able to get a cap rather than an extaction and a bridge. That would be nice.

I only have to cover half the cost, because I have insurance. I figure the cap or the bridge is going to cost me between $400 and $500.

Better than doing without though.

HUGS,

Mark

Hey Mark,
While you're at the dentist, why don't you have him remove the rest of your teeth? You'd become very popular with the boys.... ;D

Seriously, good luck with the dentist when you get there

Before you spend 400 plus dollars on crowns and such,  I want you to know that the last TWO times I have "broken" a tooth, only a piece of the tooth was broken off. It (like you) didnt hurt much and I waited for an appointment thinking I would need crowns etc.  Much to my surprise and approval....he offered reconstruction using a (new?) porcelain like material that is bonded in to reconstruct the tooth..  It costs a lot less than  a crown............. and the first one done has been fine for over two years.
But....getting the right dentist seems to be the issue like with all health care.  Two broken teeth ago....I was seeing a woman dentist. When I broke the tooth I went to her and she looked at it and said I would need a ROOT CANAL AND A CROWN. Well, she didnt do root canals so was going to refer me to another dentist for the oral surgery.  Then I was to come back to her for the fitting of the cown and so on.  I said.....at that point...".I hope you dont mind but I want to get a second opinion on this. "  I went to my partners dentist, who I can tell you is a real no nonsense type dentist and does all the work for the teachers union here etc.     HE LOOKED AT MY TOOTH AND SAID HE COULD REPAIR IT WITHOUT A ROOT CANAL AND CROWN. So instead of paying out 2000 dollars it was fixed for 300.
I hope to god you have a good and honest dentist.
