2nd year of Motivational Speaking
« on: December 05, 2016, 01:09:22 am »
So here we are in 2016 and as last year I was invited to do two motivational speeches, it was just amazing how companies in South Africa has changed towards HIV.

The first session I spoke at, the topic was importance of knowing your status.

The second Session it was a bit more intense but amazing. I had to cover the following:

•         The motivator should be someone who is living with HIV but who can caution the audience regarding risky behaviour
•         Share experience with regards to discipline in managing the condition with pharmaceutical drugs
•         The need for a lifestyle change etc.
•         How to support someone who is living with HIV etc.

For years I tried to avoid talking about it as living with the virus for me was more than enough. Though now I can admit that talking about HIV and the lifestyle we have to maintain has just gotten better as not only am I educating others I am dealing with my demons and how the last 11 years have shaped me to be able to guide and educate.

it is just awesome doing public speaking and I love it.

with our government not being to visible or out there regarding HIV, I have realised that the private sector has become more involved with HIV awareness and educating their staff.

my 2nd session I had 150 people attend the company's HIV awareness day. the bigger the audience the more I enjoy it. I had so many questions afterwards, one that struck me was "knowing what you know now, dealing with hiv and your diagnoses for eighteen months on your own, what advise do you have for newly infected and diagnosed people?"

it was just the question I most likely waited for, for so long and my answer to him was instead of trying to deal with it on your own is to find a counsellor or a person that have dealt with it, someone you can talk to, raise your concerns, a friend that will not judge you but be there every step of the way with you.

since our government don't care I feel it I can make a difference even if I can help just one at a time I know I've done more than our government.

thanks Ptrk3

since I started I never thought that I would enjoy it so much, in  a sense I'm dealing with my little pet virus in a way where I can educate and help others understand that life is not over.

I have fully disclosed my status at my place of work and the support I've had is just amazing from cleaning staff to top management. Even at work people ask questions and want to understand how I am dealing with it. I had staff approach me and asked for advise for someone they know who just found out they have hiv and the response is just great.

so it is not only out there in the real world I do my part but also close to home. a purpose who knows a calling definitely

congratulations on the work you're doing!

Many agencies here in the United States are beginning to use "peer counselors" (people living with HIV counseling people living with HIV). We, more than anyone else, understand the mental/emotional issues at diagnosis, the fight to get meds and health care, and the problems of living with HIV and can best guide the newly diagnosed. We also make some of the best, in my opinion, advocates and educators teaching HIV prevention to the public and ensuring that we all get access to healthcare and better quality healthcare.

Best wishes going forward in your own life and teaching others around you :D

Thanks Leatherman, I am just still so new to this whole motivational speaker thing that it is just awesome how people look at you full of admiration and glued to your lips as you speak.

in 1991 I received a merit award for drama in school and never would have thought that one day it will pay off. I am so happy being in front of a crowd and share "living with HIV"

maybe I also like the attention that I receive after the sessions as people ask so many questions that is so important to understand
 ;D ;)

ah just when I thought it was over, I was asked to do another session of motivational speaking this time topic : Low & Theoretical Transmission Risks

just hope I don't get asked if they will get hiv while sitting on a toilet or like questions that we all have experienced over the years  :o :o

so an update will be given afterwards rest assured

I think this one is going to be quite interesting

Another WOW speech

So in preparation for todays speech I checked on poz.com regarding the facts & myths on HIV Infections. Not knowing what the audience will be like I did 110% reading up not to look like a fool.

amazingly one question I had can you contract hiv in a shower? having sex in a shower? which of course if you don't wear a condom to protect yourself be receptive or insertive partner you can, but being that you frequent a steam bath or a sex club you should make sure that you wear a condom not only for your protection but the person you are with as well.

again knowing that the private sector is more proactive on hiv awareness just amazes me. once I started I didn't want to stop as it was one of those sessions where the interaction and questions was the motivating factor for me.

I am seriously starting to enjoy what I do more each and every day as I can make a difference to someone or some persons life.

As being part of a campaign to raise awareness it came a big surprise when one of the audience members came up to me shook my hand and the comment he had " if it had to be someone who studied HIV Management he wouldn't have listened but because it is someone who is living with the hiv virus he has admiration that I shared my story about my life with them"

he also commented that he hopes that in the near future he and the company he works for will welcome me again to be part of their hiv awareness day.

 :D ;D :o
