Tivicay/Truvada and bee products
« on: October 03, 2018, 02:30:51 pm »
Hi!

I'm on Tivicay/Truvada and my doctor says that there sould not be interaction between these medications and  honey/propolis/pollen if taken apart.

Has anybody experience with taking honey/propolis/pollen while on treatment?

Welcome to the forum,

Hi!

I'm on Tivicay/Truvada and my doctor says that there sould not be interaction between these medications and  honey/propolis/pollen if taken apart.

I think you have the answer, from your doctor. Now as far as I know i would agree with them.  I mean as long as you are not allergic to honey or bee products that is, it should be fine. Try it and find out as what agrees with some people does not work for others.

I used to love eating some honey on toast a few years back when the kids where smaller also had a phase of putting it in my tea but i switched to coffee ...

As you are new to the forum, its customary to have an introduction thread first, so i moved this thread to "I just tested Positive" . If you could share a bit more about how your doing, are you living with HIV? What are your latest labs VL/CD4 count like, how are you getting on with your HIV treatment etc

Thank you for your reply!

I found out that I'm HIV positive two month ago with CD4 = 5.
After one month on Tivicay/Truvada, my viral load was below 40 and CD4 = 46. Also, I have prescription for prophylaxis.

I have no side effect using this treatment. I'm concern about taking something that will interect with meds and reduce their efficiency, since I already had benefits from this treatment.

Jim,

Thank you for your promot reply and support!

I noticed here that you are/was on Tivicay as well.
My doctor said to avoid products with St John wort and to use suplemments (multivitamins, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium) during evening if taking meds in morning.

The pharmacist also said to not use suplemnents often and to make pause.

I'm taking Tivicay/Truvada after breakfast. Trying to boost them during these first few month.

Do you have any advice, tip?
I would appreciate that!

Thanks,

Ante

Hiya

Yeah my advice would be don't overthink this ;).
Just take your meds and live your life, your meds are working and you are doing fine.

Avoid supplements as and make sure you check interactions with other medications, if you ever do take other meds. Your pharmacist/doctor can do that for you.

Indeed.

St. John’s wort can reduce levels of Tivicay in the blood and Tivicay should be taken two hours before or six hours after taking certain (cation-containing) antacids or laxatives, sucralfate, oral iron supplements, calcium supplements, or buffered medication.

Some people do better taking this med in the AM. Seems like you are doing that already and are handling things just fine so keep doing that.

You're welcome Ante.

I noticed here that you are/was on Tivicay as well.

I know its just me but personally i've been taking Tivicay (dolutegravir) in combination with other drugs since Aug 2014. Overall its been easy, I have always been UD.

My only big tip is to relax and, as said before just check with your pharmacist/doctor for interactions before starting other medications or supplements.
