Title: Time to move on.......
Post by: AlanBama on October 08, 2008, 07:22:12 pm
I've been in this apartment 7 years this month.   They flew by, too.   I've realized for quite some time that I needed to relocate to a nicer, safer place.   I've looked at dozens of places, but none ever seemed quite the right "fit".

I'm happy to say that I lucked into an apartment in a "mostly seniors" apartment community (4 bldgs of 8 apts each).   At first, I thought they were not going to allow me in, because of the cat.   They have a strict NO PETS policy.   It just so happened that the resident manager is close friends with a lady I go to church with, and I think maybe it was her putting in a good word for me that got me in.  Plus, I told them a little fib that Fang is a very docile, well-behaved kitty, and is de-clawed.   All these statements are 'partially' true!  She is de-clawed on the front, and is (at some rare times) docile......

The apt. is a 2 bedroom, 2 bath unit; the kithen appliances are nicer than the ones I currently have.  It has brand new carpet, a storage room, and a little porch/balcony (something I haven't had here). Also, it has a pool!   Plus, it costs $15 LESS a month than what I pay here.   They have managed to keep the community 'exclusive' by having no sign, no phone number listed in the directory, and renting ONLY by word of mouth.   The apts. are totally smoke-free, no smokers may move in.    This will be such a welcome change for me.

I had to pay one month's rent as a 'deposit'.   I will be hiring movers, as I am not physically (or mentally) able to move all my 'stuff'.   I am so thankful for a loving brother and sister-in-law, who want me to be well and happy and live in a nice place, that they have offered to pay the movers.  Whew.   What a load off my mind!

So I may not be around much the rest of this month.....the actual move date is Oct 29th.  The only thing I can think of WORSE than moving, is being admitted to the hospital.   I dread it in the worst way....but I will get through it.   Step one, is to have a major "throwing out".   I'll begin that tonight.

Wish me luck......

hugs,
Alan   :-*

Congratulations on you move!!!

I hate moving. I have moved so many times over the past 15 years that I really would like to be in one place for awhile.

Throwing our/making a donation run is always fun. I still have boxes and boxes I haven't gone through yet.

Good luck!!!

Well good luck dear Allan,

This move sounds and feel so good for you. The time is right.

I am glad that you are getting help, and yes because you are a nice guy and you deserve it.

And there is nothing wrong being a young senior ;D.

Take care and keep us posted.  :-*

Hey Hon,

Congratulations on the move and the new place. It sounds great! ;D ;D ;D

I hate moving too, but this place sounds like it would be worth the pain of moving.

I think this is just fantastic news.

HUGS,

Mark

Congrats Alan.  Don't pull your hair out packing endless boxes.

Like Sharkie, I've moved SO many times in the past -- 7 times in 20 years since my college graduation.

Dear Alan...the best of luck on your move...I know you mentioned you were not at all happy where you have been living, this other place sounds so much nicer- and for less money as well !!!

Take care and go in with your right foot first- my mother always says that and I still don't know what it means.  :D

Congrats!

I LOVE moving - and for two reasons only -

I like to clean and I'm a total decorating queen. Moving somewhere is an opportunity to redecorate! Yay!

congratulations sweetheart! I am so excited for you. C'mon now,....admit it, you know you are going to be more than just "not around as much" for a while. You will have so much nesting to do. ;D Bi Polly is gonna love this.
Take care of yourself, and do only as much as you can. We'll be here when you get time. Big hugs Paw.

Alan,

That is great news.  I just finished moving and while it is a pain, the new place and city are just fabulous.  Take it slow and if you need help, please ask someone for help.

Let us know, when you get in the new place.

I'm happy that you're looking forward to your new place!

Just make sure that cat doesn't get outside.    :P

Congrats on the new SMOKE FREE place!!!!

I remember you posting about how it would come through the vents.

I've only moved 3 times in 38yrs ... I guess I'm just boring =]

And just think how young you will feel surrounded by all the seniors.

Enjoy!!

Alan,

You have been so helpful to me here, that I was very happy to hear that you have found a new place to live.

My grandmother taught me that when friends move it is good to give  traditional, symbolic gifts. While not exciting in their own right, each item is a wish we hope for them:

      Bread: to stave off hunger.

      Salt: for a flavorful life.

A Broom: to sweep away trouble. They should leave it behind when they move again; it’s bad luck to take it with you. Or go modern and include a dustbuster.

A Bottle of Wine: for joy. Champagne works too! Yeah new house!

A Candle: to banish bad karma,  sometimes throw in a bundle of sage.

A shiny new coin: to bring luck and prosperity.

A Jar of Honey or a Bowl of Sugar: so the new house really is home, sweet home.

A Bouquet: with an odd number of flowers, for beauty and abundance. For someone with a green thumb and a garden, we might sub out a plant.

Well, through the years, and after having moved state to state, city to city, apt to apt, some in new complexes, some in the same complex.....(those were good, no truck needed).... I have discovered that while grandmothers advice was sage, and though these things are nice, that there are some things that come in a heck of a lot more handy.....

Enjoy your new apt.

Alan, I'm so glad you're moving into a nicer place.  You certainly deserve it.

I wish I lived closer, I'd like to go through the stuff you're going to be throwing away (hee).  Don't overdo and we'll be here for ya.
  Luv,
Betty

Hi Alan,

I know how hard it is to move. We moved this last Feb. In fact it was Feb. 2nd. and i was out of the hospital for one day after having full knee replacement. I was the lucky one if you could say that. I got to sit back and watch my boys and friends move us. The last load was moved in a very heavy snow storm. The guys looked like snowmen when they brought stuff in.We have a sliding glass door in the living room and that is how they brought stuff in. I was at least thinking clearly enough to lay down old towels and rugs so they wouldn't get the carpet filthy. I love this new place, it will be so much less then that old trailor we lived in. We have hot water forced heat and we don't have to pay for it. That alone is worth moving here.
Hope you get all settled in and enjoy you new place.

Love Wendy

Alan, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy..you will love being with the "seniors"  (I am one)  they have a great outlook on life and enjoy almost any diversion...walk around and say hello  you will be very much welcomed as the "new young guy"  who loves cats...

Congrats  .....and be absolutely hard hearted about "cleaning up and getting rid"    you dont need half of what you have....I have moved 14 times in the past 30 years..almost an expert  ..hated it every time....

We're all moved in!   It took every ounce of energy I had.   Moving wasn't so bad when I was younger, but this move has been a tough one for me.   Expensive, too.   I had to buy a new washer, my old one was leaking oil and was not worth repairing.

I still don't have my computer set up at home, but hopefully that will happen one day this week.

hugs,

Alan

Good luck in your new place Alan, the last time we moved, (back in 2006) our cats hide in the closet (in the new place for almost a week).......now they own the place  ;D Alan, take your time, and don't stress-out....ok  ;)

Good luck in your new home.

Have you washed everything in the house from curtains to bedspreads in that new washer?

Thanks everybody!   I'm at home, online, on my own computer!  YAY.

Things still pretty unorganized around here; boxes galore, and stuff piled around everywhere; but it's taking shape, slowly but surely.  We're in and fairly settled.   The cat seemed skittish the first day or so, but she's fine now.  She manages to be into whatever I am trying to work on, so that she's always just exactly in my way.....

I just find that I don't have much energy these days; doing a little bit takes a LOT out of me.   So this may be a slow process.

hugs to all,

Alan
