Returning to Montreal
« on: April 25, 2014, 06:38:23 pm »
I go back to my favorite North American city (Las Vegas is a close second)...Montreal on Monday and will stay in the Village again for six days.  Look forward to my annual trip there and eating some fine Montreal cuisine (especially Chez Cora for those that remember our AMG there)  Wish we would return to this city again...it was a great first AMG for me.  Renting a cottage myself in the Village...did this last year (in a huge March snowstorm) and still had a wonderful week.  Will post from there next week.

Gary,

I have some bad news for you.  Chez Cora is temporarily closed due to a fire in the building, that also closed the Pizza place and the Peep Show.  The rest of the village is open for business.

Hate to hear that!  My backup breakfast place is downtown at Eggspectation.  I must admit I have always like the waiter Steven at Chez Cora.  He has been there for well over 12 years.

I am hoping Piazetta is not the pizza place you are referring to.  I always go there once if for no other reason than that the escargots appetizer is so unique to that place.

I am staying at the BBV on Montcalm.  Really like that place and the owners.

Steven is the son of the owner as they have other locations as well.  Piazetta is fine, I'm referring to the Pizza Pizza place that makes fairly pedestrian pizza.

The place you are staying is mere doors from my loft and my dog is best friends with their dog.

I'll see you when you get to town.

Oh dear our Jody will not be happy to hear that, even though we haven't eaten there for some 9? years, it was still his favourite place to eat, he still talks about it every now and then. ;)

Fear not Jan, they will reopen soon, as soon as they get rid of the smoke smell, which is still very strong, two months after the building burned.

There are so many nice places to go for brunches or breakfasts, around here, that I'm sure you'll find something to replace Cora. ;)

In the village, you can try Coo Rouge, cajun/french style, with Sunday brunch that's very good (1844, Amherst), De Farine et d'eau fraiche, both cute pastries and nice grill-cheeses/breakfast sandwiches (1701, Amherst).

If you want to try someplace outside of the village, for breakfast/lunch, I'd recommend Olive & Gourmando in the Old-Montreal (351, Saint-Paul), Burgundy Lion Pub (2496, Notre-Dame Ouest) or Le Chien Fumant (4710, De Lanaudière) ! :)

And if you can manage to, you should try to go to the cabane à sucre ! (Sugar shack) Some are still open, but many are closing this weekend as it's the end of the sugar season... and you need a vehicle to go outside of Montreal. But if you like to eat until you roll on the floor, you'd like this experience of 'true' Québécois decadent food with tons of maple and... fat ! lol :D

Yes dearest Jan I did love Chez Cora, as we all did.  A wonderful breakfast.  It was so good they only opened for breakfast and then closed for the day.  Gary have a wonderful time in your favorite vacation  spot and best to Joe K as well.  It has been a bit chilly here in New York so I hope the spring will finally arrive in these parts and Montreal will get some warmer weather for your visit.  Another AMG in Montreal some day would be welcome here.

Jody :)

I will visit the church in the Village where we held our memorial service and put an memorial plaque on the wall.  Everytime I return to the Village I go back to visit that.  It was at the Church of the Visitation.

I arrived, after an exhausting travel day that started with my getting caught in a monsoon in the airport parking lot (imagine...backpack, luggage, halfway between car and terminal...and then downpour of Biblical proportions.)  Miserable!  and then of course two absolutely crowded planes (like a NYC subway car.)  I can report that our beloved Chez Cora is closed for renovation as Joe K. mentioned...how sad.  My little B&B offers breakfast and really that was quite nice (I almost never do it because I so love Chez Cora.)  Looking forward to a relaxing week in beautiful, even though chilly, Montreal.  Hoping to see our very own global moderator, Joe K. as he is nearby.

Ever since my high school French class I've wanted to visit Montreal and Quebec City.  At 40 I've still not made it to either.  Hope you have a good time.  Sounds like such an interesting city to explore.

Bug,

If you ever get to Montreal, make sure to also visit Quebec City.  It's the only walled city in North America and is one beautiful city.
