HIV transmission through known HIV Infected Person
« on: February 04, 2012, 09:53:22 am »
Hi, I had a casual encounter with an HIV positive man yesterday afternoon and unbeknownst to me, he inserted his penis in my anus upon initial penetration. Which then prompted me to ask him, hey you're wearing a condom, right? He kept it inserted for approx 5-10 seconds before he put on a condom. After some further play he revealed that he was HIV positive but that he was undetectable because of his medications.

On my way home, I read up further which put questions in my head. While being the receptive person in the sexual act, I know poses a high risk, how significant is an exposure like that to a known HIV person? Am I a candidate for PEP? I don't even know where to go for getting treatment for PEP in my area short of going to an ER.

Flip, what you have described is a relatively low-level risk but it definitely was a risk. I'm assuming there was no ejaculation although there could have been pre-cum in that situation.

If you're going to do PEP it has to be initiated within 48-72 hours after an exposure to the virus. The sooner the better. It's for 28 days. For a conclusive and hopefully negative result you get tested at 3 months after completion of PEP. There can be side effects to the drugs as they are potent.

If you don't do PEP you can get tested for a conclusive result at 3 months after the risky incident.

You will have to decide if you want to do PEP or not. You can go to any ER to initiate the treatment with a few days supply and then see a private doctor to get the rest of the treatment.

Deciding to do this is a person decision and you have to consider if you think the risk was so minimal that you're willing to take the chance of testing negative and not do PEP.
