Dental care
« on: May 26, 2022, 10:03:31 am »
Hello,

I'm new to this forums site. I found this site because I was looking for someone to speak to about my issues. I was diagnosed with HIV feb2022 and I immediately got medical help, so the hospital started my ART treatment. I have told my brother about it and he didn't treat me differently. I have not really felt the social stigma because only me and my brother know. I started having teeth problems so I decided to get my teeth cleaned at the dentist. The dentist is also a resident in my building. Before they started my cleanup i was required to get a blood check which I did and I openly said I was poz. The dentist and his assistant refused me so I went to other dental care providers and they all refused me. I later went home and I realized my neighbours might know now because of the fist dentists. I no longer want to be seen in public due to people in my country (somalia) will make my life miserable. I already know of someone that got removed from his house and his kids kicked out of school..... I don't know anymore and my chest feels heavy now because of stress and fear.

Hiya,

Sorry to hear about the recent diagnosis. Glad you have started treatment, though.
What treatment are you taking, and how are you getting on with treatment?

Unfortunately, the stigma surrounding HIV remains an issue. I wish I could tell you that you will not experience issues, but that would be a lie.

I've experienced it myself like being refused medical treatment, one doctor even told my ex-wife that she should reconsider letting me see my kids and, my ex-girlfriend was refused dental treatment over her HIV status. However, she sued them and won.

However, you learn over time what dentists, doctors and clinics to use and those you need to avoid; the same can be said for other services. Also, if you are like me, you will get to the point that you simply don't give a f**k what others think and give those who should know better a hard time.  ;D

You are new to this, and it's a lot to digest and adjust to. You don't get there overnight.

Welcome to the forum; take it easy and keep us posted.

I still don't understand the treatment. I take 3 different pills ( 1 pill at 5AM and the other 2 at 9AM). The 1st pill at 5 Am is called ISONIAZID BP and the other two are called ACRIPTEGA & CO-TRIMOXAZOLE.

Hiya,

What was your CD4 count?

Co-trimoxazole is an antibiotic that can be given to prevent opportunistic infections when your CD4 count is low.  Isoniazid is either for the treatment or prehaps as prevention of TB (tuberculosis)

The two meds I mentioned above you will not be taking for life, they are just temporary.

As for the Acriptega, this is your HIV treatment, this works by suppressing HIV and during your follow-up meetings the doctor will check your viral load (VL) to see if it's getting lower as that would mean the HIV treatment is working.

Acriptega is a combination pill, more commonly called TLD and contains the following HIV meds: tenofovir disoproxil, lamivudine, dolutegravir

First of all thank you Jim Allan for talking with me.

The doctor said they will check my cd4 count probably the next refill or after. They don't have the equipment/machine (don't know the name of the device) on hand. I'll post on here when I find out.

Hito, my dental tech found my thrush, which sent me to get tested, so I am sorry your experience with dental nonprofessionals is so bad. (I had AIDS - a 60 CD4 count at nadir.)

Universal precautions should be taken regardless of the known sero statuses of dental patients. It's the folks they don't know about that they should worry most about, of course!

Keep taking the meds, holding your appointments, getting lots of rest, and giving your body time to repair some.

You're welcome.

Okay... Well once or if your CD4 counts are above 200 then they normally stop the Co-trimoxazole. This will then reduce the amount of pills you have to take daily and manage.
