One issue I've considered with my annual shot is my preference for the quadrivalent vaccine over the trivalent.  My reasoning is that it covers BOTH B strains (Massachusetts and Brisbane), instead of just the one that is expected to be prevalent.

Here's a short explanation:  https://www.cover-tek.com/trivalent-vs-quadrivalent-your-guide-to-the-flu-vaccine/

As noted in @JimDublin's links, this is also an ideal time to update your pneumonia protection.

I'm in the clinic for my second shot of Hep B vaccine (the first round didn't take) early October, so will ask them if they can do the Flu shot at the same time.

I read the cdc guideline for this year.  They seem to be suggesting not later than the end of October.  Locally I've been told to hold off until early October in case of changes to expected strains.  Hopefully this season is better than last.  I was freshly diagnosed then ad we had some local deaths.

My ID Doc told me I need the flu shot too.

Me, with a CD4 of 50 last month. I'm wondering will the shot leave me tired n weak for a few days after?

They also want to give me Hep shots too but are waiting for my immune system to get stronger first.

I'm back to ID doc in 2 weeks so I'll ask when they can do it for me.

Low or high CD4 counts will not really change how you feel post vaccination.

Look common side effects are generally very mild so sorenes where the injection was given and, some people mild beadache, fever, aches etc for a day or so. Generally nothing to be worried about if you ask me.

That said talk to your doctor about this concern beforehand i'm sure they will offer reassurance as well and, answer any questions.

FYI:

The recommend cover for 2018-2019 northern hemisphere influenza season is the following:

an A/Michigan/45/2015 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus;
an A/Singapore/INFIMH-16-0019/2016 (H3N2)-like virus;
a B/Colorado/06/2017-like virus (B/Victoria/2/87 lineage); and
a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like virus (B/Yamagata/16/88 lineage).

It seems like it was just the other week that we were getting our southern hemisphere flu shots, but I realise I've just had 6 months fly by.

I get really tired after vaccination shots and sleep for about 12 hours afterwards

being weak and tired could be just par for the course at this point for you, I'm sad to say; but with as weak an immune system as you have right now, you certainly need protection from the flu, pneumonia, and PCP pneumonia. (that would be the flu and pneumonia vaccines and Bactrim/Septra). Being tired/weak is a small price to pay to prevent something much worse.  (I've had all three and none of them were fun. LOL but I did learn that I'll do whatever it takes to not have  PCP for a third time  ;) That stance has now kept me out of the hospital 20 yrs and 6 months :D )

Hang in there. Getting through the first bit waiting for your cd4s to recover above 200 can certainly be a trying time; but as long as you remain adherent to your meds (and get the proper vaccinations ;) :) ), you'll eventually be a lot healthier.

I got both the flu and prevnar 13 vaccines within a few months of each other with about 60 CD4. I think nowdays as good as medicine works undetectable viral load is most of the battle. I have yet to be "hospital" sick since starting treatment "knock on wood"

the hubby and I got flu shots today, as the remnants of #HurricaneMichael blew through and rained on the Carolinas. Next year, I need to pick a drier day to go to the doctor's. LOL

Just bumping the thread as a reminder.

November 5, 2018
https://www.poz.com/article/get-annual-flu-shot

Should I get an annual flu shot?

Yes. Annual flu shots are recommended for everyone except infants younger than six months and anyone who may be severely allergic to the flu vaccine or ingredients contained in it, such as gelatin.

People who are allergic to eggs should talk to their doctor before getting a flu shot. Also, tell your doctor if you aren’t feeling well or if you have a history of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (a severe illness that causes paralysis).

Influenza is a serious illness that can cause death, and the vaccine is the best way to avoid getting the flu. National Influenza Vaccination Week 2018 is December 2-8, and an excellent time to get an annual flu shot.

I asked at the clinic the last time I was there and for some reason it wasn't ready at the time, and they said they'd contact me when it came in (they didn't).

I've had some sniffles for a few weeks now, and my gf has had the most horrendous flu type thing (streaming nose, cough, ear infection, aches and pains) so it's probably not wise for me to get it right now, as I don't think you are supposed to have it if there is any kind of cold in your system.

Frankly, I will wait until I'm clear of sniffles and then pop into town and pay to get it done on the high street I think. I just hope I swerve the nasty bug my gf has in the meantime!

I don’t.
I work in healthcare and I’m well aware of the research etc and we have very negative responses when we refuse it. I just can’t bring myself to have it and I can’t properly explain why either...! It just feels wrong....

Hmm i bet, here the Royal College of Physicians have been calling to make it mandatory for all Healthcare workers as: Quote 'Patient safety takes priority'. Personlly I think its a good call to make.

Why on earth would getting a shot that decreases your chances and the chances of all the patients around you from getting a potentially deadly disease "feel wrong"?

You probably can't "properly explain why" because there is no cogent reason.

IMHO - anyone who works in healthcare, around patients, should be required to get a flu shot as a condition of employment (unless there is a medical reason one can't get the shot, of course).  If they refuse, they have effectively turned in their resignation.

Quite simply it’s my body and my choice.
It’s outrageous to suggest it should be mandatory for healthcare workers!

Ill be honest I agree with Mike.

Personally as a patient and as a parent, I would not want a healthcare worker near me or my kids who is not vaccinated.

But yeah I agree as well its your body, and your choice, however i think the choice should come with the outcome of no-longer be allowed to work with patients.

No, they are asking people who are caring for the most vulnerable and susceptible in society to reduce the risk of catching and spreading what is a deadly illness to the vulnerable people they are caring for and to be part of the herd immunity.

You and your kids are more likely to get it down Asda than from an un vaccinated healthcare worker who practices scrupulous hugiene (tissues are underrated!!)

Sure, but the ASDA staff member is not breathing and sneezing on me or my kids for prolonged time in a confided space, neither did the ASDA staff member go into healthcare.

I accept there is a risk when dealing with a staff member at ASDA, I should expect better from someone in healthcare

Backing up @JimDublin, I'll reluctantly weigh in on the latter portion of this discussion from my own experience in October when someone's rhinovirus, of all things, took me down.  And, fwiw, some of it was due to improperly discarded tissues.  That simple virus halved my CD4, putting me squarely back in AIDS territory, and two months later my system still hasn't recovered.  I was intubated for 36 hours and put in isolation.  Personnel (and visitors) were required to use contact isolation protocols - mask, gloves, gown, etc. - for a week following.

imo, whatever steps personnel are required to take, including flu shots, to reduce the possibility of passing infection to those with compromised immune systems is a no-brainer.  Unfortunately, more than once I had to angrily croak my objections to careless personnel who failed to follow protocol.  In a couple cases I reported the most egregious violations and, indeed, was taken seriously.

Quite simply it’s my body and my choice.
It’s outrageous to suggest it should be mandatory for healthcare workers!

Having worked in healthcare for many years, early in my working career, I was always required to have a flu shot.  would they have fired me if I refused, I don't know -- probably not, but I never pushed it, because I understood the importance and was willing to do what I could to protect the sick and vulnerable that I had contact with (not too mention myself).

If you don't want to, that is fine and is your choice -- but you are, potentially, pushing that choice on to others by being a potential carrier of something that could kill  them.  So, while I would NEVER say they should forcibly vaccinate you, I would say that choices can have consequences.  In this case a choice to not get a flu shot (unless medically disqualified from it), IMO should come with a consequence of not working there.

The fact that you have no cogent reason, seems to show that your fear of this shot is not grounded in science and healthcare is all about science.

Finally went for my flu jab today at the clinic, after a guy at work came in the other day complaining how ill he felt (going into the office sick, two days before most break up for the xmas holiday was wholly irresponsible I think, but thats another story). Anyway, it jogged me into action.

On the subject of whether health workers should have the flu jab. Of course they should. I am surprised there is even any debate about it. Something that takes about 2 seconds, and could save you - or others - from a debilitating illness at best, and at worst will possibly reduce the severity of many non-flu colds, seems such a no-brainer.

It's one thing that you could expose a virus to people who are vulnerable to infection (including old folk), but even putting that to one side, many perfectly healthy young people die from flu each year. If I had it my way, I'd make it mandatory for everyone.
