Commentary on key ingredients:

http://www.k-pax.us/faqs-full.html

What are some of the most important ingredients in K-PAX Immune Support Formula?

The highly potent antioxidants found in K-PAX Immune Formula (and not found in most other multivitamins) are especially important in producing its observed benefits.  Their functions are as follows:

a. Acetyl-L-Carnitine

This nutrient is the primary ingredient that increases cellular energy production at the mitochondrial level.  It specifically increases the flow of free fatty acids into the mitochondria which directly boosts energy production.

It has also been shown to be of significant benefit to people with nervous system disorders such as peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimer's disease by improving nerve cell conduction.

b. Alpha Lipoic Acid

This nutrient is believed to be one of the cell's most important and potent antioxidants.  It works to help detoxify free radicals that are generated when the cell is under stress (from both HIV infection and antiviral medications).

This nutrient has also been shown to improve symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in patients with diabetes.

c. N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC)

Studies performed at Stanford University have shown that HIV(+) individuals are deficient in NAC and that when this potent antioxidant is supplemented, there is a significant decrease in mortality from HIV infection.  NAC also helps to thin mucous and keep the lungs and nasal passages free of infection.

d. L-Glutamine

This amino acid provides an important energy source for intestinal and muscle cells.  People with HIV infection need as much support of their GI system as possible to help counteract the effects of antiviral medications and the presence of unhealthy organisms that often grow in digestive systems of people who frequently use antibiotics.

Don't forget the Vitamin D 1200 units a day!

Over the weekend, I read a report that vitamin D has been found to be a more important vitamin than vitamin C is, in preventing colds and flu. I'll try to remember to hunt the article down and link to it. I read it in a real newspaper, so I'll have to find it online.

Just an observation, no scientific fact!

It has often be associated that CD4 drops occur after flu Vaccination. As we often receive this vaccine in the late fall/early winter, it is also during the time when our exposure to sunlight tends to fall off in the northern climates.

This year I took 1200 unit of Vitamin D during the Winter months, my SAD was mitigated and my CD4 was stable.

So by no means am I making claims about vitamin D, but since we tend to go into a more deficient state over the winter, there may be health impacts that can be mitigated via supplimentation or a more determined effort to get Sunlight on your Skin in the winter months!

info from newyorkbuyersclub supplement information page about Vitamin D.

NAME:     Vitamin D3
DESCRIPTION:    Vitamin D is both a vitamin and a hormone: It's a vitamin because your body cannot absorb calcium without it; it's a hormone because your body manufactures it in response to your skin's exposure to sunlight.

The two major forms of vitamin D are D3 (cholecalciferol) and D2 (ergocalciferol); calciferol means "calcium carrier" in Latin.
FUNCTION:    Vitamin D promotes retention and absorption of calcium and phosphorus, primarily in the bones. It is used commonly in conjunction with calcium to treat osteoporosis.

Vitamin D3 is increasingly found to be important to sustain good health of not only bones, but other tissues such as the brain, intestines, muscle and immune function as well.
SOURCES:    There are very few food sources of vitamin D; the best sources are coldwater fish. Other foods with smaller amounts of vitamin D include oysters and dairy products.

Many products, such as milk and cereal are fortified with vitamin D.
DOSAGE:    The official U.S. and Canadian recommendations for daily intake of vitamin D are as follows:
• Infants 0–12 months, 200 IU (5 mcg)
• Males and females 1–50 years, 200 IU (5 mcg) 51–70 years, 400 IU (10 mcg); 71 years and older, 600 IU (15 mcg)
• Pregnant or nursing women, 200 IU (5 mcg)
DATA:    There have been studies done on sunlight-deprived subjects ranging from submarine personnel (who were given 400 IU daily) to Islamic women (given 600 IU daily), both concluding that these people needed additional vitamin D supplementation to maintain proper bone health. One study recommendis doses of 1,000 IU daily for sun-deprived individuals.

Research as to whether or not vitamin D may help prevent cancer of the breast, colon, pancreas, prostate, and skin have yielded mixed results.

It has been suggested that since vitamin D levels in the body drop in the wintertime, vitamin D supplements might be helpful for seasonal affective disorder ("winter blues"). Hoever, a study of 2,217 women over 70 years of age found no benefit.
CAUTIONS:    Insufficiencies of vitamin D may result in severe loss of calcium and consequently a softening and weakening of bones (rickets).

Too much vitamin D may have the opposite effect of taking calcium from the bones and depositing it in the heart or lungs, reducing their function.

People with sarcoidosis or hyperparathyroidism, and those taking thiazide diuretics or calcium-channel blockers should not take vitamin D without first consulting a physician.

Hey, we also need calcium for aging bones!  Also, when taking calcium make sure there's Vitamin D in it.  A doctor told me to drink lots of water while taking calcium+D because it can cause kidney stones.  Just a thought....

hi all,

I was wondering if you call your ID doctor before adding a supplement to your diet? I've been holding on any supplements for now and want to discuss them with him next visit. I guess I should ask him if he wants me to call each time..

thanks,

Yes, I usually put possible supplements on my quarterly checklist and discuss them with my HIV doc beforehand. For example, she gave me green light for selenium, probiotics, cannabis and minerals, but she also said I should stay away from St. John's wort, garlic, valerian and supplemental vitamin E. She recommeded umckaloabo, but not echinacea.

milker, I'm giving you the whole kit an kaboodle, it's not a big as it seems as the multivitamin takes a big chunk of this, but I do take about 35 supplement pills a day. (I can now get my pills down in one gulp!) This is from a prior post i did a while back, I have since added the glutamine as a daily and just added the ECGC.

This is the list I take, essentially, I build my own program based upon KPAX formula, but purchased from Newyorkbuyersclub.org which comes in at about half of KPAX cost.

KPAX is a formula develop by DR. John Kaiser. My univiersity specialist doesn't believe in boutique care. And is skeptical about nutiritional supplementation in general as there isn't much formal study to base decision making on. But has had a more open mind lately as he has some slow progressors who are taking supplements. He now said to me, what ever your doing, keep it up.

I don't want to come off as an advocate. It is what I have found on the internet, thought compelling and now follow. I think that the newyorkbuyersclub.org is a tremendous resource, and as a non-profit, a great place to get your nutrients as a fair price.

So I showed the list to my doctor, who said it won't hurt but was not particularly pushing for me using supplements, and mentioned that it would be expensive, and my own choice. So I will go ahead anyway and since he didn't strike any, I will study them all and make my own elixir :D He was all for multivitamins, though, so that's good.

I inquired about Selenium and he didn't say yes or no. So it's a yes for me !

Ok so I was shopping around, nybc, vitacost, etc.. and I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the choices and the total number of pills.. can someone recommend a brand or a product because I'm a bit lost there.

Basically I want multivitamins+ minerals + ecgc + Omega Fatty Acids. If the total is more than 6 pills it's not gonna work for me. I'd like a good amount of calcium, vitamin B and selenium. Any suggestion?

Thanks,

Milker.

^_^ @ milker

If you're after a really good once a day all in one (excluding green tea)
it has to be Centrum Select 50+
And yes, I did read 50+
50+ has a lot more micronutrients in. I have compared them.
It contains EVERYTHING we have listed except green tea.
Excellent, good list we have going. Saves a lot of time having to search around on the forums I think :P

Okay, I might make a minor alteration to Probiotics because of new debate and findings on "Prebiotic" yogurt
Going to checkup online and do some research on the topic I will alter the list accordingly

(page one, middle of page)

any comments guys?
