Unsure if I kept myself safe
« on: January 12, 2025, 08:27:03 pm »
Hi,

Im a 37 year old heterosexual male. I went to Thailand (18 Dec) where i picked up a girl from a bar. Super drunk of course. She gave me a blowjob and i went down on her. She sucked on my nipples, i had a cut that day that was scabbed over. We had protected sex. The issue was when i was done, i realized that there was a bit of menstrual blood on the outside of the condom. She either began having her period or was at the tailend. Under the above circumstances, have i put myself at risk for HIV transmission and wait for the window period to test? I usually have a yearly medical that does all testing and this current testing would be additional to that. Appreciate all the advice given to everyone here!

Hiya,

Read your post three times, what you posted here isn't an HIV risk, move on with your life.

Receiving a blowjob lacks the conditions required for acquiring HIV, thus it makes sense that after nearly 40 years of this pandemic in terms of BJ's, there hasn't been a single documented case of HIV transmission to an insertive partner (the person being "sucked"), and you will not be the worlds first. Sucking on your nipples also isn't an HIV risk, lacks any of the biological conditions needed for you to acquire HIV and the cut isn't a route for HIV to infect, also saliva is hostile towards HIV leaving it unable to infect, Cunnilingus also isn't an HIV concern.

As for intercourse, HIV can't be transmitted through an intact latex, polyisoprene or polyurethane condom. Unless a condom obviously fails during intercourse, there is no reason to be stressing about HIV or testing for HIV outside the standard yearly HIV screening, menstruating makes zero difference.

Now, of course, you had risks for far easier to transmit STIs from the oral sex received & performed on her, syphilis, herpes, gonorrhoea etc. The intercourse was also an STI risk as the levels of protection condoms offer for various STIs depend significantly on differences in how the diseases or infections are transmitted. Some infections (Not HIV) are transmitted primarily by skin-to-skin contact, viral shredding or skin-to-lesion contact, etc., which may infect areas not covered by a condom, such as genital herpes, human papillomavirus [HPV], Chancroid (Haemophilus ducreyi), Mpox etc.

However, there is no need to panic about STIs every time you have sex, just keep using condoms and get a routine HIV & STI screening yearly. Talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated against HPV, HPV, Mpox & hepatitis A & B.

So not an HIV concern, move on with your life.

Here's what you need to know to reduce your HIV risks:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse correctly and consistently, with no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about PrEP as an additional layer of protection against HIV and consider getting vaccinated against HPV, Mpox, Hepatitis A & B.

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as safe in terms of acquiring HIV still pose a risk for other easier-acquired STIs. So please do get tested at least yearly for STIs, including but not limited to HIV, and more frequently if condomless intercourse occurs.

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms; testing is the only way to know.

Kind regards

Jim

Thanks for the reply Jim. Additionally, I took a 4th gen AG/AB test from the clinic today (27 days) and the results were negative. Since there was no risk, I will move on from this! Once again thank you for all the advice given to me and everyone else!

The test in this case was a tad pointless given the no HIV risk event and timeframe but you're welcome.

Continue to use condoms for any intercourse, and as you are sexually active, get a yearly STI & HIV screening out of standard routine. Consider PrEP and getting vaccinated against HPV, HPV, Mpox & hepatitis A & B.

Hi Jim,
I have been having quite terrible symptoms, dry mouth, sore throat, weird tongue, dry throat, one ulcer in my mouth. I have a feeling it is from anxiety but i have my doubts. I did a 4th gen rapid test at the clinic (lancet) at 37 days and it was negative as well. However, im having a hard time believing that the symptoms are unrelated. My question is would a 37 day 4th gen rapid test be completely unreliable? Im planning on doing the 4th gen lab test on day 45 as well. Been trying to move on but this has suddenly taken over my life. Need some advice. Thank you

Asked and answered already.

See your GP and treat whatever is making you feel unwell and I hope you feel better soon. However, to be clear, your left arm and testicle could fall off but it has nothing to do with HIV from the events posted here and I'm not going to pretend you need hiv testing over this "no HIV risk" situation.
