« on: July 01, 2008, 05:51:23 am »
Someone very close to me has HIV.  His numbers were so low it was almose @ AIDS.  He started meds and now his eyes and skin are yellow. I know he should change meds but I heard changing meds will made your body resist other drugs in the long run.  Help.  I don't understand any of this.  I am HIV POZ too.  But my dr told me I don't need meds yet.  Thank God!  Please Help ??? ???

Hello,

Welcome...

Do you know what meds your friend is on?  If one of his meds is Reyataz, then there is a possibility that this may be causing his eyes, and skin to turn a yellowish brown. Others with more knowledge can give you more information.

Do you know if your friend has been co-infected with Hepatitis ?

Here's a little info on Reyataz, one of the medications available :

Reyataz can increase levels of bilirubin, a pigment found in the liver. Increased bilirubin can cause the skin, nails, and the whites of the eyes to appear yellowish-brown. Increased bilirubin can also be a sign of liver damage. However, in people who have taken Reyataz in clinical trials, an increase in bilirubin has not been associated with any other signs of liver damage. Reyataz should not be combined with Crixivan (indinavir), another protease inhibitor that can cause increased bilirubin levels.

Tell us a little more about yourself.  A good place to start is with the lessons. You can read them here. Anything you don't understand from the lessons, don't hesitate to ask. There are plenty of people here to give you some answers.

I was on Reyataz and experienced the "yellow eyes".  This was merely cosmetic according to my doc but I had too many people commenting on how I looked so "jaundiced."  I was able to switch to Prezista without difficulty and the jaundice disappeared.  I do not know what your friends meds or if there are other conditions present are but I agree with J.R.E.  If done properly and under a docs care switching meds should not be too difficult.  I hope things work out for your friend.
