Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Question - pls help

Hello,

I had complete unprotected vaginal intercourse with a very high risk man, twice.

He is an extremely promiscuous man, and has travelled all over Thailand and various parts of Asia, engaging in unprotected sex with sex workers there.(I found this out after - its been very upsetting).

I went for HIV testing - tested negative at 5 weeks.  I understand I have to wait for the 13 week test now to be conclusive etc.

My question is as follows:  do you have any rough statistics re: for people who tested negative at 5 weeks, what proportion of these people may test positive at 13 weeks ? you have said in a lot of cases that it is very unlikely etc. Are we talking about 50% ? 25%? 10 % ? less than 10% ?

I know every one's situation is different etc.  I am just wondering , (generally speaking) statistically what my chances/odds are here.  As you know, the wait to complete the 13 week conclusive testing is ridden with anxiety and irrational fears (you've heard it all I'm sure).

p.s. I have read most of your posts here, and I am familiar with your oft quoted paragraph re: 22 week average seroconversion/4-6 weeks etc.

Given the basic information you already know, your negative at 5 weeks is definitely encouraging. Anything more than that is just guesswork, although it's certainly understandable that are looking for reassurance.

I'll just say stay productively busy with other matters, avoid surfing the net and the waiting time will pass more quickly than you may imagine is possible.

No less important is for you to be aware that anytime you have intercourse unprotected you are putting your life at risk. You can have as much sex as you like and with as many partners as you wish regardless of their HIV status. BUT the insertive partner must be wearing a condom everytime. No exceptions. And no excuses please. Condoms provide very effective protection when you use them.

Thank you for your response.  Okay, but it does happen that someone would test negative at 5 weeks, and then positive at 13 weeks ? this is a likely thing that can happen ?

Yes, it can happen. But it's not usual.

The hard fact is you have to live with uncertainty while you're waiting.
