Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Hi,

I was reading through most of the posts and i have found out that it is harder for men to be infected with HIV by another woman. I have a problem. Is it possible if you can help me. I am straight (male). Two nights ago, I had unprotected intercourse with a woman with HIV (dunno when she was infected, probably for a a year) for 10-15 seconds? I was really drunk that i did not have a full erection, probably around 60-70%. I pulled it out once i had a bit of unconsciousness. She later told me she was HIV positive. However, i did not wash it until the next day because i passed out minutes later. What are the chances that i might be infected? I am really scared.

2. The second question is will i be infected if she was infected with HIV 2-3 years ago? Will there be a slight chances that i might not be?

You put yourself at risk from having unprotected sex. The only way to know your status is by testing.

Walle, yes, there was risk involved in the situation you have reported. There are some mitigating factors to bear in mind. HIV is a fragile virus and not easy to transmit. It is significantly hard to accomplish from female to male. You had a single and very brief exposure. All of that means the odds are significantly in your favor that you will test negative.

You can test at 6 weeks after the incident to get a preliminary result. Assuming you test negative, which is what I expect, that negative is very unlikely to change when you re-rest at 13 weeks. And you do need to re-test at 13 weeks for a definitive all-clear.

For future reference you need to avoid putting yourself at risk by mixing casual sex with excessive drinking. As long as you always without exception use a condom everytime for intercourse, it doesn't matter if your partner is HIV+ or not because condoms provide every effective protection.

Your advices really helped me a lot. I ll go and see a doctor in week 6 and 13 just to reconfirm my status. Really appreciate all the people who replied. Thanks.
