This subject area is often neglected in scientific research, but is sometimes as "life and death" as taking your daily anti-retroviral medication.  Never neglect your mental health.  We HIV-positive people lose far too many of our brothers and sisters to treatable depression.

Last year, we lost a prominent and delightful member of our forum to depression:  may Miss Phillicia continue to rest in peace.  You are missed and will never be forgotten.

Summary:
Being hospitalized with infection was associated with an increased risk of suicide death and the highest risk of suicide was among those individuals with hepatitis and HIV or AIDS, according to a study.

I'm posting this in the Research Studies & News Forum to encourage those in need to seek support in the Mental Health & HIV Forum:

and to seek face-to-face and immediate professional health if you have suicidal thoughts.

Awaiting VL

I`m under 2 months in after dx and can see how tricky the mental side is going to be..and that`s before the "hospitalisation for infection" headlining this post.Tricky only insofar as i`m prone to losing myself in activities, books, internet etc and sometimes forget i have Hiv/aids.I come here to this forum to do research, hopefully help others but also to sober up(no drink involved). The mere words anti-retrovirals,kaposi sarcoma,Hiv,Aids are enough to bring back an important part of this new reality,to restore  perspective.I am grateful for what i have today but am not going to lose sight of what may become tomorrow.

2 years ago i had a bad depression unrelated to Hiv,that took me a year and a half to come out of..6 months after that and here we are.
Aware is the name of the voluntary organisation here in Ireland that aims to help people suffering from depression. It is aptly named as depression can be very deceptive and utterly debilitating.Strange as it may seem to say, that year and a half was considerably more difficult than my Hiv/Aids Dx.I hope i don`t live to regret saying that.
I hope this is not hijacking the intent of this post.If it is,feel free to delete.I just wanted to add my name to this post and perhaps be of use to someone should they start to feel low and suspect a deeper depression.
I am in rude health today !

No "hijack" worries at all.  Your response is the type of response I was seeking when crafting the original post.

This forum is meant to support HIV-positive people and any physical and mental health struggles they may face on their journeys through life.  Depression may be part of that journey for some, so it's important that people recognize and identify symptoms of depression within themselves (and others) and seek appropriate treatment, just as they would if their viral loads increased:  achieving and maintaining mental health is often as important as achieving and maintaining physical health.
