Retirement Abroad
« on: June 12, 2017, 04:14:38 am »
Hi.  I am an expat currently living in Thailand.

My Topic: Retirement.

I have lived in Thailand for several years.  I think it is time for a new adventure.

The requirements:

Country should have fairly easy retirement visa rules.  Not a lot of hoops to jump through.

Treatment reasonably cheap and accessible by Foreigners.  And no deportation of HIV+.

I am interested in hearing from expats who are currently living abroad.

As I have said before, Thailand fits the above.  What about Brazil? Uruguay? Eastern Europe?  South Africa?

Over to you.......

Not to pry, but what's wrong with Thailand?   I'm seriously considering retiring abroad in 5-10 years and Thailand was high on my list.

I've been giving Ecuador a long look.  First world affordable healthcare, mild climate, still pretty cheap, uses the US dollar,  and not too far from the US if you need to get back home for some reason (mostly a benefit for Americans).

Thailand seems exotic but feels a bit remote for those of us in N. America.

Last I heard they don't give resident visas to HIV+

I was considering working there 15 years ago.  Had job offer.  Was negative at the time but considered the HIV test a non-starter for a job offer.

Maybe the WHO programs re: Zero Stigma has changed the picture but.....

Really need an EXPAT who is there to chime in.

Also the Paperwork is a bit much compared to Thailand.   Also have heard the selection of HIV drugs is limited.
