Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

hi, im a 20 year old female asking for some advice.  in late august i had sexual intercourse with a guy my own age without a condom (PIV sex).  before it happened i asked him when he had been tested last and he said july, and results came back negative for everything.  it was a total drunken mistake and i stopped it a few minutes after it began, we were both drunk and he didn't ejaculate inside me. 

i know the 3 month mark is when to get tested so last week i went to my local clinic.  unfortunately the results take 10 days to come in (nobody knew what i was talking about re: rapid testing) so i'm waiting very very anxiously.   i've met the guy a few times and i'm quite sure he is not a heavy drug user (in regards to needles, etc.).  i havent experienced any of the common "infection" symptoms but i'm just really nervous regarding the possibility, i know i engaged in a risky activity so i'm wondering if anyone has any assessments/pieces of advice.

Hi,

You've the smartest thing you could do by getting tested. Yes, it is hard to get through the waiting, but ultimately it's the best thing to know your HIV status accurately. Hopefully you are going to scoot through safely this time. From what you have described of that single incident the odds are in your favor.

However you do need to learn from this experience. First of all, mixing casual sex with excessive drinking is definitely to be avoided. Otherwise it leaves you in a not good state of mind to make good decisions.

Also, asking someone their status is understandable but should never be the basis on which you proceed to have unprotected intercourse. Until if and when you find yourself in a securely monogamous releationship in which both partners have reliably tested negative together, until that time you should always make sure the guy is wearing a condom everytime for vaginal and anal intercourse. No exceptions. No matter how great the guy looks. Or what you think you know about his history or what he says, because even a well-meaning guy doesn't necessarily know his status accurately. So condoms are a must. Period.

Good luck with your test result and let us know. Again, I think that based on what you have reported the odds are you will test negative.
