Title: Should I get tested
Post by: toanl on April 10, 2010, 02:20:50 am
Hello all,
This forum is amazing, so much information and great contributors.

On March 4th I had protected vaginal sex with an escort and around midway into the sex as i pulled out.. i guess cause i sensed something was up.. i pulled out i saw a huge tear, and my entire penis was exposed. Cant say how much time i was in her when it tore, max 7-8 secs unprotected. I stopped immediately. I put some water on it to clean it up.. i dont know if that helped or not.. and stopped the entire sex session
Since then i have been freaking out.. dont know what to do. Last week around 4th week, i came down with sore throat, running nose, phlegm, fever of 99.5(for 3 hrs).. so obviously freaked out even more. That lasted for 4 days max with some cold medication of course..

Now i dont know what to do .. how likely is it that i might have contracted hiv.. Some help would be great.

Your symptoms are not at all HIV-specific and your risk was absolutely minimal. It was a very brief exposure and you were protected until the condom broke. Transmission from female to male is difficult to accomplish, more so than the other way around.

Test again at 13 weeks just to confirm your negative status. I certainly expect you will test negative.

As for your symptoms, discuss them with your doctor. They have nothing to do with HIV.

For future reference, make sure you are using fresh condoms that fit you properly.

Andy,
Thanks for the reply, those couple of seconds(8 secs) i meant to say were when the condom tore .. not the entire session being 8 seconds

Until the condom tore it was protecting you. That 8 seconds after it broke was a very brief potential exposure. And yes, I still would expect you to test negative at 13 weeks. For your peace of mind you can do an initial test at 6 weeks. A negative at that point is a very strong indication you will continue to test negative.

That's happy news. I expect your 13 week to get the same result.

Cheers.

Andy/Everyone,

I have a question about the test, I thought i went to do the antibody and p24 antigen test but the result indicated they did only the antibody test. The number was 0.385 or something.
I asked the doc the next day about p24 antigen so he called the lab and told them to do p24 test as well(with the same previous day sample). The result came back negative but with the same number 0.385 showing test for AB and p24 antigen antigen test

Now what does that number mean and when they tested for p24 as well how come the number remained the same? I asked Dr Sean on Medhelp about this and he said its completely irrelevant. Can someone please let me know. Thanks

The fella from MedHelp is right It's irrelevant. Why they're doing p24 antigen testing is beyond me.

I agree with Andy - your 5 week negative result is strongly suggestive of a negative result at 13 weeks.

Thanks Matty
I thought they do p24 antigen testing to detect the virus before antibodies form. Right?

Yes, that is so, but P24 only works fairly early after a possible exposure.

And I still expect you to come out of this ok.

Cheers.

I forgot to mention that i am uncircumcised.. does that raise my level of risk?

The risk for transmission is somewhat greater for a guy who is not circumcised. However, with the negative result you have already received I still expect you will continue to test negative.

Really.

I was going thru medhelp through some of the posts and RapidRod aka Teak in one of the posts mentioned he has seen 6 week negative turn positive and also seen single exposure result in transmission of virus from female to male .
Now that scares the livin daylights outta me. Have u guys seen any cases like that as well?

I've not seen cases like that. I don't expect you to be the first.

I can't speak for Rodney.

And you were told your 3 month test would be conclusive. You've been questioning your Oct. 09 exposure since December.

Oct 09 exposure is separate, this is a recent 6 week exposure. I know i know i never learn.

The testing timeline doesn't change when to obtain a conclusive test result.

If you continue to search the web I can absolutely guarantee you will find bits to feed your worst fears. All to no good or conclusive purpose of course. Doing that will just make the waiting time until testing that much harder.

I can tell you that in my experience it's rare for a negative at 6 weeks to turn positive at 13 weeks. What you need to do in the remainder of waiting time is to get busy with other things in your life. And don't bother saying you're too worried to do that because I can tell you that response won't fly here.

What you also need to do is learn from this experience. We've been around this block with you before. When you have unprotected intercourse you are gambling with your life. Have all the sex you want with was many partners as you like. Just do it the safer way and always put a condom on your pecker, buddy.

Now, get busy with other things.

i do realize that getting busy with other things in my life should be the way to go.. but trust me at the back of your mind the what ifs do play every now and then and do interfere in every day activity.
I completely agree that searching the web is really really really F'ed up and alters the thinking and pops up loads of shit in to ones head.
Thank u much for putting some sense into me.

Title: Should I get tested
Post by: toanl on August 10, 2010, 11:37:45 pm
Hello alll,
A week ago i had protected sex , and when it was over i withdrew and ejaculated in the condom.
She took the condom out and flushed it. Now this whole sex act lasted couple of minutes, as soon as she took the condom out i jumped in the shower and washed my penis with soap and water.

Now the vaginal fluids that were there on the base of my penis could they have gotton in my urethra as i washed  my penis. Please let me know if there is a risk as its starting to freak me out once again and should i get tested.

Thank you all

Of course you do not need to be tested over this protected incident. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse. Once hiv is outside the body, small changes in temperature, and pH and moisture levels all quickly damage hiv and render it unable to infect. The soap and water in your shower would have been more than enough to damage the virus, if it were present in the first place.

You have not had a risk and you do not need to test. Keep using those condoms and you will remain hiv negative.

Thank you Ann for your prompt reply. Now u say that soap and water would have surely done the trick what if i had massaged my penis without them or even inserted my finger in the woman and got her fluids on my hand and then massaged my penis with that hand.
Sorry i know i am being a pest asking all these crazy non applicable/non related questions, but i just want to be informed as u all r knowledgeable in this area.
Thanks in advance

toanl,

Hiv is not transmitted outside the body. It is not transmitted by getting someone else's fluids on your hand and then touching or masturbating your penis. It wouldn't have mattered if you didn't wash afterwards, you still had no risk. That's why I said the soap and water would have been MORE THAN ENOUGH to damage the virus and render it unable to infect. It would have already been rendered unable to infect just by being outside the body.

Keep using those condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple.
