What Effect Could This Have ON HIV Research?
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:35:12 am »
This involves the recent court decision regarding federal funding of stem-cell research.  Even if stem-cell research won't reveal a cure for HIV, it definitely could help with medical issues we have to deal with.

This court decision is horrible news. Stem cell research does have the potential to actually cure HIV and many other diseases as well.

Hopefully this won't affect the research at City of Hope (Paula Cannon, etc) which I believe is mainly funded by state and private funds.

Yes, this ruling is bad news, and hopefully the Judge's decision will be stayed while this is appealed.  Meanwhile, if Congress doesn't act this year, it may be harder to resolve this issue after the mid-term elections depending on which party controls Congress.

As I understand it, the Berlin patient was cured using adult stem cells, but embryonic stem cells are used in a variety of HIV research currently underway, as well as research on many other diseases.  I hope some investigative journalism is done to show the public a list of all the research currently in progress that is being put at risk as a result of this decision and the tens of millions of dollars of research that may end up being thrown in the trash during a time when funding is becoming tight.

Here's one example of a company doing HIV research using embryonic stem cells.

Love the american judicial system. One man gets to decide on issues that affect millions, second time in a month.

That said, courts in the UK seem even more idiotic.

Agreed, bad news.  Republicans and particularly rabid fundies should be taken out and shot.  The good news though is that Dr. Cannon's work isn't effected.  Her work is with HSPC's (Hematopoietic Stem Progenitor Cells) as opposed to ESC's.

The judge didn't arbitrarily make the decision however, he found that the side seeking the ban be instated was on the correct side of the law.  Now, whether or not the law is appropriate, just, or fair, that's an entirely different story.

Well, well, well... said the Brit, cos that is all there is to say about out and out unjustified comment. You might have some grace and withdraw the remark.

On stem cells, it might mean nothing, it is possible not to make stem cells, eg from skin and other body tissues, they don't need to be embryonic stem cells for researchers to use them (this kind being the subject of the injunction).

Re the judge - i'm not saying whether the decision is right, just seems like should take more than one person to decide on.

About the uk - exactly - I am slamming my locale :)

i just read a lot of idiotic court cases in the UK that are so left of center, it's crazy. Judges in Europe seem to have more common sense or maybe the press doesn't pick up on their silly decisions.
