Should I Keep My Insurance?

I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm a permanent resident of Mexico, and I have private insurance that I obtained before being diagnosed with HIV 4 years ago. The premiums keep increasing as the insurance company tries to get people off of my plan. I can't switch to another plan without revealing I have HIV.

My financial situation has changed, and I can't really afford to pay $500 a month for insurance, which amounts to  $6000 per year plus $1000 deductible. As long as I stay in Mexico, my HIV treatment is covered by the MX government, and certainly, my yearly medical costs are nowhere near $7000.

I know I won't get another expat insurance policy if I let this one go. Which is my dilemma.
Can anyone think of a great reason why I should keep it, other than the obvious? I'm happy to received any advice. Thanks!

I think the question is are you committed to staying there? The only person that can answer that question and ultimately down the line will have to live with the decision is you.

If you ever want to move back and don't have insurance I presume it's going to be problematic?? That said if you never plan or need to move back and can live with that then the insurance for the US sounds like a waste of money.

The US has forbidden insurance companies from considering preexisting conditions when applying for insurance. So, getting insurance in the US is no issue.

In Mexico, there's a national system of public healthcare centers for HIV-positive folks, and they provide healthcare and medicine at no cost. I have no plans to leave Mexico.

Do you need a long-term visa or residency to get put on Mexico's public healthcare plan? Or can a foreigner on a tourist visa possibly get access to the public healthcare? That would be amazing.

What are the costs of HIV treatment and meds in Mexico if paying out of pocket?

       ojo.           @Mrhopeful, if you are getting hiv treatment for free, why you have to pay for insurance?, do you have other health conditions?.
How old are you?. You have to ask yourself these  questions, I think… please keep us posted. Good luck.
