Jerry Herman Turns 80 This Year and . . .

he's had HIV since 1982!*

This link shows the 10 or so minutes of his Kennedy Center tribute and it's really worth a look (if ya like show tunes, that is). Lots of Broadway stars paying tribute:

*And he's not a long-term non-progressor either. He almost died and has been on meds as soon as he was able to, even taking the very earliest ones in clinical trials. My point being, his longevity is even more impressive.

I couldn't find any additional info, but how did he know he was Poz in 1982 or has he been poz since 1992?

I read his book Showtune, an I don't remember how he knew he had it as early as 1982. It's also mentioned in the Poz.com article (that the year was 1982). I think it was because he had a lover who got it and died early and he was able to deduce that he had it even before testing became available.

His song from Hello, Dolly was instrumental (no pun intended) in giving Wall-E an extra bitterwseet dimension.

I figured it was something along those lines.  Still an awesome timeline to survive that long.

The original London production of La Cage did not do great business.

AIDS had hit hard and an all singing, dancing musical about the Gays just never attracted the hetero crowds.

It was great to see the show come back triumphantly a few years ago.

But there will only ever be one George Hearn.

Yes, he was (is) great. I saw the original La Cage. Of course, I was a mere child.

I didn't know that it didn't do well in London that first time. It's funny, since this recent revival on Broadway was imported from London.
