Finally got some numbers
« on: March 03, 2010, 05:15:14 pm »
Alright so I finally got some numbers today, I went four years untreated. I didn't get a viral count yet, the test was done but she couldn't acces the numbers but I did get CD4 and the percent one

CD4 -152
 (19%)

The numbers frankly has me scared, and crying. I know there going to get better once I start meds in 3 weeks. She seemed really positive that I should expect to be around for a long time. There's  just this little part of me though I feel like its broken down.  I didn't feel that sick, I still don't.. and she told me some people feel just fine. I guess I expected better.  or should say I was hoping.

My numbers were around the same 17 years ago sweetheart, and I'm way above 1,000 cd4s now.  Cheer up.

ps: why do you have to wait 3 weeks to get a prescription?

there waiting because we dont know what my medical covers yet.  and thank you that cheers me up a lot =) I about fell over when she told me. I guess I just thought because I felt so good, that I was still doing good.

But I went four years w/o a test after a negative thinking I was fine and not getting tested. It was stupid of me, but I was hiding behind denial.

Don't beat yourself up about this -- what's done is done and having regrets will get you nowhere.  Put your sights on the future with the realization that along with an HIV diagnosis you must consider both physical and mental betterment.

Should I assume you have a case manager at an ASO or something assisting you with the insurance coverage questions?

Rahvyn,

Listen to the Divine Miss P. He speaks wisdom to you.

A CD4 of 152/19% isn't great but it's not a huge disaster and there's no reason to think the appropriate medication regime won't turn it around in short order.

I know..just a moment a panic I think the 3 weeks is also to get the genotype. I really like the doctor I have she's nice. and for someone like me with really bad social anxiety thats a major plus.  When I went in to see her today I had all my health problems organized on paper for her.

I just called to tell my parents, my dad is taking it good but my mom is a wreck so I told her about what you just said Miss P and that really cheered her up.  It will probable take me tonight but I pull myself together pretty quickly.

That's the spirit! :)

Really this is gonna be ok. I remember when I had 15 CD4 cells with a percentage of 5. My numbers are considerably better now.

You'll see.

I'm hoping my numbers will be as "good" as yours when I get mine in another week.  So in my humble opinion you'll be fine.

Rav,

This is all new to you, so yes it's scary. Yes it's also a bummer when you get results back that are not what you wanted or expected, I've been there, we've all been there. I wished I could take away your fear and anxiety but I can't so I will just echo what the others have said...You will be just fine ;)

I cant speak to the CD4's you posted but I can speak to the Percentage, I was at a low of 12% but after 5 months on meds I more than doubled it to 30%. So this is just another example of how well the meds work. The same will happen to you, your Cd4's and percentage WILL increase.

A big 'ol Texas hug to ya!

Hellraiser

I am sorry and I hope they are better too!

Willy

Thank you, I feel better now after reading this post and having some time to set alone and pull myself together. I'm usually such an upbeat positive person.  And lately I've had to be extra strong for my husband and for my family.  I broke today on the car ride home only so much can pile up on a person before they do.

But I feel better now and more confident.

Rav,

it's Ok to break down; you have been absorbing/processing a lot of info in the past couple of months.  The key to all of this is to bounce back up, and you will be doing that once you start treatment.

Everyone else has given you some sound advice and good examples.  All that I have for you is a (((hug))) and lots of good wishes.

Take a deep breath.... You'll see how you will get past this phase pretty soon.

In the interest of full disclosure to our newbie Rav, Etay has had very low numbers and high VL's for awhile and has not yet decided to initiate HAART even though clinically he is WELL below the trigger point (I'm not judging him, I'm just sayin').

So yes, you can feel just fine with a low CD4 and percentage, as Etay does. However the numbers do not lie, once CD4's drop below 350 -500 (depending on the expert) it is recommended to start HAART so there is no further damage done to your immune system. In the case of percentage, a percentage of 13 or lower is an indicator that your immune system is damaged, again a clear sign that HAART is needed.

Christ, and off we go.

Ravyhyn (cool spelling, btw), pay NO attention to what Etay1207 posts.  It doesn't add anything to these boards.

You are right to be scared and right to get on meds right away.  Your feeling of the floor falling out from under you is normal and feel free to come back and vent about the process. That is why we are here.  You will also see people on here who's numbers were far worse than yours and they are doing very well now.

Try to think in a positive way - you know where you stand and I bet when you take your next test (after you start meds) you will be happy to see you're moving toward good health :)

Thank you guys =)

Etay, I hope you get on the meds soon.  for your sake and your loved ones.

and Pete thanx =) The name I borrowed a long time ago from a friend's roleplaying character who well, basically taught me to believe in my creative skills. I use it to honor him, and it kinda stuck and eventually became my art and writing pen name.

You are very welcome.

Have you popped over to the "Positive Women" forum and introduced yourself?  It is a forum for ladies only and I can imagine it is a great space to share what you are going through.  Women can post in all the forums, but Positive Women is only for women since the majority of members here are male.  I think you will get a unique perspective that you can relate to.

I guess we don't have a "Positive Gay Men" forum because Skeebo would be talking to himself in the Living With forum :)   (I kid, I kid)

Ravhyn,

You haven't been recently sick that would have dragged your numbers down?  My numbers were at 171 at 19% when I was diagnosed.  My numbers bounced back after getting over illness.  I'm just wondering if you've been sick before the bloodwork or whether you know this is where you immune system really is at this point?  Your % is actually a very hopeful sign.  You could easily get it up in no time I'm sure.

Either way, I wish you all the best.

Hey Ravhyn,

As new as this all is to you, you are going to be fine. At my lowest, I had12 CD4s and 5%, but I started treating it and here I am, 26 years later with the best CD4s I've ever had. Just take it one day at a time, be good to yourself and come here when you need some support.
