Title: Your Neti-Pot can kill you...
Post by: WillyWump on December 17, 2011, 01:05:08 pm

For those of us who use Neti's, using tap water in your Netti-Pot can kill you, especially if you are in Louisiana (Hellraiser).

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2011/12/16/two-dead-in-louisiana-after-unclean-water-used-in-neti-pots/?hpt=hp_t2

"Tap water is safe for drinking, but not for irrigating your nose," said Dr. Raoult Ratard"

"Ratard urged neti-pot users to fill the pots only with distilled, sterile, or previously boiled water, and to rinse and dry them after each use."

Apparently this nasty brain-eating ameoba can be present in some lukewarm tap water.

I've always used tap water in my Netti, but will start using distilled water. However the problem now will be warming the distilled water before hand, what a pain in the ass.

I also occasionally add a couple drops of Hydrogen Peroxide to the water I use, but this ameoba is not killed by hyrdrogen peroxide either...tough little bugger.

I've heard of a couple stories of some unluckly folks getting seriously ill from ameobas in lake water while swimming, boating, or jet-skiing.  But, not from tap water.

How horrible. Thanks for posting.
I was taught to do with using my freshly washed hands, tap water, and no neti pot.
This this means I need a neti pot (which i find kind of gross) and sterile water?
They sell disposable individual nasal rinse tubes in the pharmacies but they are quite expensive and not terribly ecological.

I'm wondering if this is the same reason that my doc says to use distilled water or boil water when using my CPAP machine for my apnea -- to prevent this nasty, little amoeba from growing (I'll have to check with him next time I go in).

I think most douches are made with distilled water --- and it would have a long way to travel to get to your brain from your butthole; however, it could possibly eat your prostate, which would take most of the fun out of being a bottom (I believe that type of amoeba is called a Bottom destroying Prostate Consuming Amoeba or BDPCA for short).

I'm guessing he uses the homemade versions, tap water and all.

I knew a guy in S.F. about 10 yrs ago who used to use a garden hose up his ass, howoever he's now on the dearly departed list, may he rest in peace, he was a very interesting man, to say the least  :D

Well the deaths are rare, and these recent ones are out of Louisiana and most likely from a municipality with a B or C water rating (it is Louisiana afterall)

However being the worry wort that I am I bought some distilled water and am heating it slightly in the microwave oven (but of course over-heating it), then I have to let it sit out for several minutes to get to lukewarm temp. All of it is such a pain in the ass. But I am addicted to my Netti and wont give it up.

oh please, the Ameobi would scream and high-tail it out of there in search of a more hospitable arse. You have nothing to worry about.

Many folks use an attachment to their shower head to douche.  I saw one in my friend's shower.  It was stainless steel and looked like a metal vibrator.  Where do you buy something like that?..lol.  This was before the internet.  Well, back when all the internet was for was AOL and porn.
