AMG 2012 Schedule of Events
« on: January 19, 2012, 09:32:42 am »
Due to AMG starting later in the week than in past years, I"ve started this thread to start a conversation about the AMG 2012 schedule of events.

I'm thinking the following so far. Please feel free to post your ideas.

Meet and Greet - Saturday 28th

Memorial- Sunday 29th

Ok.  130 views and no feedback.  So...unless anyone objects, I'll plan the meet and greet for Saturday evening.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please share.

Thanks
Dennis

Coming from someone with Asperger's... doesn't having the meet and greet after we've already met and greeted each other for a few whole days kind of not make sense? It seems to me that the meet and greet should be pretty soon after we get there, as a way to introduce ourselves to one another! Aspie logic FTW!

Thanks Dennis!

Sounds good to me.  If there are any folks who can not make it until the weekend, they will still be able to attend.

That is a good plan Dennis, as bocker points out we can have the meet and greet a day later this year for those who get there Saturday, and the memorial is perfect for Sunday so Gary for one does not have to rush to get there.  I could see him bursting through the door like the end of that 60's spoof movie, "Around the World in 80 Days."

Why not an informal one the first day, so everyone knows who is there and such, and a "formal" one on the next day. Otherwise everyone will be scouring the place looking for avatars.

Selfishly, I hope we wait until Saturday for the meet and greet because I get there early Saturday morning.  I already hate that I will miss one day and two nights of activities but I cannot get out of my work commitment (heaven knows I have tried!)

I will be delighted to have the Memorial some time on Sunday...we should be able to find an appropriate community venue in the DC area that we can easily reached by Metro (and of course avoid having an argument about a church site...we won't be able to use one on Sunday anyway...this way we kill two birds with one stone!)

I have just returned late tonight from my ten day cruise.  Too keyed up to get to bed..but work awaits tomorrow (ugh!)  Already excited about late July!

Why not an informal one the first day, so everyone knows who is there and such, and a "formal" one on the next day. Otherwise everyone will be scouring the place looking for avatars.

There is generally a "welcoming committee", a.k.a. RAB and Jan -- and any others who happen to be around.  They do a wonderful job at ensuring just about everyone gets a hearty welcome when the reach the hotel.
I've always felt the "Meet and Greet" is a bit of misnomer -- most people have already met at that point.  It is really just one of the few pre-planned, universally (well, mostly) attended events.

It was nice having the meet and greet after being in Seattle a while.  Everyone gets a chance to know each a little before kicking back a few.  I worried about finding the "group" but it wasn't difficult at all.   :o

After the last memorial, I couldn't care less about the venue.  I won't even voice an opinion this year.  I gained so much from it that the location takes a distant back seat to the message.

Looking forward to seeing old and meeting new friends.

I should probably mention that I was just expressing some literalness on my part. I think Saturday is fine! Also, a Sunday memorial sounds great too. Of course, I will not object this year to any location that wishes to host us. Its all about the memory!

Hello Everyone:

We have a venue for the Memorial Service!

I wasn't sure how long the service typically lasts, but they blocked off 2 hours for us.

Detals:

Date: July 29, 2012 (Sunday)
Time: 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Venue: William Penn House  (http://www.williampennhouse.org/home)
Location: 515 East Capitol St SE, Washington, DC 20003

Getting to the location via Metro rail:
"Take the Blue or Orange Line to the Eastern Market subway station. The station is on the corner of Pennsylvania Ave SE and 7th St SE.   Cross Penssylvania and walk north on 7th St till you reach East Capitol Street (about six short blocks). Turn left and walk one block pass 6th Street. We are the third house on the left, 515 East Capitol St SE.

If you took the Red Line to Union Station, we are still a short walk. Exit Union Station at the statue of Columbus, cross the street to Delaware Street. Walk on Delaware past the Russell Senate Office Building to the Capitol Plaza on the east side of the Capitol. East Capitol Street is to your left between the Supreme Court and The Library of Congress. Walk east on East capitol 5 blocks and you are at William Penn House."

If the walk is going to be prohibitive to anyone, I'm sure that people would be able to share a taxi to the venue from the Metro (there are typically plenty of taxis available just outside of the Metro stations).
