Ketogenic Diet
« on: July 05, 2012, 09:21:28 pm »
I called my Physician to see if this was "safe", and he said it was as long as I was supplementing my vitamins with (Zinc, Vitamin D, Multivitamin, Fatty Acids, B12, B-Complex)  and drinking water regularly. He said that this can potentiate a higher release of HGH, Testosterone, and lower insulin. Also it can lower prolactin. This diet is effective, but only if you are not prone to Type 1/2 Diebetes. (Then it is downright dangerous)

Has anyone had luck with the Ketogenic diet? It is a period where you are in a fasted state for a prolonged period of time.
In 2-3 days of fasting. Your body shifts into something called Gluccogenesis where it uses your subcutaneous (White) fat and converts into gluccose by the liver the end result are ketone bodies. It stimulates your hypothalamus / pituitary gland to produce more hormone (If you are able to time your supplementation just right) It provides you with this mental clarity.
It is known that with fasting the body breaks down muscle tissue; Resistance training has been known to stop the process and actually you can gain muscle mass during this period.

I know in order to see noticeable results of this diet you have to be on it for a while because it takes at least 72 hours to start the process.
This process it takes a lot of dedication.  So it's not for everyone. Hunger is a strong reaction by the body. I will say this (Because I LOVE to eat) after the 3rd day. You lose the feeling of hunger all together really and you are induced in a calm state.

The ''standard '' ketogenic diet is a bit too extreme.
I liked the cyclic one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_ketogenic_diet

Never tried the diet, per se.  I have gone without food for a whole day.  Once the hunger went away, I did feel better--a feeling of being more focused and just feeling better overall.  But, that soon changed to feeling weak.

I did learn something interesting from my gastro doc.  I always thought eating while taking certain medication, such as Tylenol, caused the liver to have to work harder.  I thought it was better to space food and medications.  But, he said many drugs deplete this enzyme that starts with a "G" (can't remember name), and that it is actually better for the liver to eat with medications.  So, if someone is taking many meds, then consider it is harder on your liver most times to not eat.

A keto diet is truly a very low carb diet, not a fasting diet. You eat every day ,meals etc. But with the absence of carbs in your diet , it releases ketones and hence the keto diet. Fastimg is no good.

Surf is correct, no need to fast for keto. You want to shoot for less than 30-40 grams of carbs a day. You will feel tired and weak but the fat will melt.

Your brain needs 100 grams of carbs to function everyday, so if your body does not get these carbs it will burn fat instead. That's why it's so effective. The problem with this diet is of you do not make changes to your diet afterwards, you will gain it all back quick. Make sure to re-introduce carbs slowly.

Yep Bates is spot on. I personally felt like shit when I tried to tighten up and went on a Keto diet a few times. Very lethargic. Should eat more fat when going keto, supposed to help with the energy. I never felt that nasty awful I ate to much full feeling that I do when I eat regularly. Also your muscles because of lack of glycogen become really flat looking too.

I'm on <50g of carbs a day.
I eat mostly fatty fish, poultry,  egg whites, some cheese, olives, olive oil, walnuts, herbal supplements (Hawaiian spirulina pacifica, artichoke extract before meals).

I don't feel tired at all.
I feel tired only when I have a carb day (twice a month).

I've found out that carbs is what makes people sleepy and depressed.
I tried to taste chocolate on a carb day, and I thought I was going to vomit.
The sugar was so strong and yuckie...(My only sweet food on keto days is rooibos tea with stevia).

Oh, you will not lose muscle if your protein intake is high ;)
I think I take 300-350g of protein every day.
So, some of it will transform into glycogen, when needed.
Your muscles will get flabby only if you don't exercise.

I fasted for 2 months and lost almost 4 stone in weight which I have kept off for over a year.  Effects on my health in general were reflected by my very rapid decline in Cd4 count (this was done prior to medication) and increase in viral load.  Granted this may have happened anyway but it was extreme.  Afterwards I was losing loads of hair for months.  Had white patches all over my tongue.

On the plus side I didn't have thrush again.  My Bp decreased and confidence increased.

I don't think I'd do it again - especially not now I'm on medication.  My way was extreme though, the feast/fast diet is very popular now, perhaps that's an option?  That's generally what I stick to now.

I'm sorry, but that sounds exceptionally ill-considered and not healthy in the least. Maybe you should invest in a consultation with an actual nutritionist instead of just making shit up.

Miss P - apparently our natural state is to be in ketosis, back in the cave-man days.  Granted we've evolved a lot since then to be reliant on carbs for energy!  Ketosis does make you feel fabulous, full of energy and euphoric but it's not a great way to lose weight imho - but it was what I needed and worked for me at the time.  I stick to a healthier way of maintaining my weight now!!

I, for one, don't want to live like a caveman. Dinosaurs always chewing up the lawn and what have you.

Not eating for a few days does perk you up, though, and I'm not being sarcastic. I always assumed it was your body saying "hey, use this burst of energy to either hunt down a brontosaur or come up with a better diplodocus trap or we're going to die", but I'm not a dietitian and base this on years of solid linguistics training. ;) I would like to be a dietitian. Why didn't any of you tell me this 16-17 years ago?

I exist in this, what do you call it, ketosis state a lot, and it's fun until the hallucinations, sometimes after depending on how friendly they are and what they want you to do. When they're nice ghosties with few demands, it does feel pretty cool, and you can get a lot of work done. But the same is true of meth amphetamines. I don't recommend either for long-term health.
