Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird author, dies aged 89
The Guardian

First play I ever saw was a production of To Kill a Mockingbird and I have fond memories of reading the book.  RIP.

I had heard that Truman Capote based a character in one of his novels on Harper Lee.

Have not yet read "Go Set a Watchman" but will have to set some time aside to do so soon.

Harper Lee and Capote were childhood friends (Capote spent his summers in Lee's town. living with his aunt, about whom he wrote often as an adult).  They remained friends in adulthood.  She helped him with some of the research and interviews in Nebraska when he was researching and writing his masterpiece, "In Cold Blood."  The movie "Capote" deals partly with their relationship in Nebraska during this time ("To Kill a Mockingbird" had already been published and was in film production at the time).

So sad, but she had been in such bad health for the last several years. At least her suffering is now over. To Kill a Mockingbird was one of my favorite novels from my literature studies growing up, but I have never seen the film.

Indeed, was doing some "googling" (Is that a word) this afternoon as it was driving me nuts and I think it was in his first noval Other Voices, Other Rooms he wrote a character based on Harper Lee.
