Boston City Tour Proposal
« on: May 28, 2009, 02:07:13 pm »
Hello All,

In my search for an appropriate city tour, I was presented with a unique proposal I wanted to put forth.

The proposal would incorporate a scavenger hunt around Boston and the freedom trail with a city tour. I was initially told the cost would be $30 per person. Cost includes city tour/scavenger hunt along with lunch at a pub and prizes at the end.

Tour could start at our hotel or anywhere else we'd like.

If this is something you all would be interested in I would try to negotiate the price down to $25. This may or may not be accomplished since the $30 price he quoted is already discounted.

Let me know what you all think.

Ciao,
Dennis

I think this soundslike a lot of fun.  I'm sure it's educational as well.  Like maybe we could find Hester's scarlett letter.  I'm sure it's around.  It's just been misplaced.

I think this is a GREAT idea.  I've done something similar in Richmond, it was alot of fun and a great way to see the city (and get to know those in your group).
Count me in!!

The city tour, as noted on the schedule, is taking place on Saturday morning.

According to the arrivals/attendees list you are going to be in the area. For anyone who is listed in the arrivals thread; It is important if you are not going to attend or take part in a planned event that I'm notified. Discounts are negotiated and money is put up in advance (out of my pocket) based on the numbers listed in the arrivals thread.

Allow me to also add I received a rooming list from the hotel today. Only 6 reservations and 25 people confirmed in the arrivals thread. If anyone is going to be unable to attend, now is the time to let us know.

I agree with the others, this does sound like fun.

Do we do it in teams or as individuals?

This sounds like a ton of fun and a great way to tour the city and learn some history.  Count us in.

Some how I missed that the price includes lunch and fun, fabulous prizes.  Makes the deal all that much sweeter.

Dennis, you ROCK!

I'd be happy to lead a group in the scavenger hunt -- I haven't lived in Boston in over 10 yrs, but should have more knowledge than a first time visitor....  I hope....    :D

Here's an update.

The scavenger hunt is approximately 2 1/2 hours. Our group would be split up into smaller groups of 4 or 5. The scavenger hunt would take us to prominent spots along the Freedom Trail. Each group would have clues with a list of items to find along the way and take pictures of. An awards ceremony with trophies and other prizes would take place at the end of the scavenger hunt.

The cost is $30. It does NOT include lunch. Lunch inclusive would be approximately $40 at an establishment in Copley Square. I'm sorry for the error in my original post about lunch being included. I must have misunderstood our original conversation.

Please, Please, Please! If this is something you are interested in, please speak up. Even if you are not interested, speak up!  I need to hear from more than just 8 out of 20 something people attending. If the group wants to confirm this I have to place a small deposit to hold the date.

If this is something the group does not want to partake in, then I have to find an alternate tour. It's getting close to departure and I have many loose ends to tie up.

Thank you for your prompt response.

I'm all for the scavanger hunt (without lunch) but it's no biggie.  If the others say 'no', fine with me.  But what day?  Some of us are thinking about a baseball game possibly on Monday.

I'm still up for it -- with or without lunch.  With lunch is my preference, but I know that $$$ matters may cause a different choice -- Although, $10 for lunch in Boston is a pretty typical price.

City tour is still scheduled for Saturday. I'm thinking around noon time. This will give those who went out the night before or endulged at the M&G time to sleep in.

Sounds good to me...So it looks like we have the annual ceremony, the historic walking tour, Salem, the scavenger hunt and for some of us possibly a baseball game, maybe Provincetown?.  Did I leave anything out?

I'm so sorry I haven't posted in this thread until now.  Santi and I would rather not do a scavenger hunt.  Saturday afternoon might be a good time for us to visit Hull, which is where the first house I remember living in still stands, across the street from Stony Beach. Santi loves the ocean.

Again, my apologies for not responding earlier. I've been avoiding.

Thanks Dennis for organizing.  I'm up for the hunt/tour/lunch.  Please let us know when you have enough people to go.  I've been to Boston before so the tour isn't vital - but the hunt would make it interesting.  I can lead a group if you need a leader.  Does the hunt involve using the hop on hop off tour trollies?

Count me in for the scavenger hunt, lunch or no lunch. I think it sounds like a lot of fun!  ;D

We can get an early lunch, a late brunch or just munch as we go. Who knows? I just think it sounds great.

Regarding the reservations, Jody and I are roooming together and I believe, if memory serves, he has already made the reservation.

(Who's still game either way.)

Lunch after our scavenger hunt will be at FiRE + iCE Grill & Bar and will be all you can eat.
http://fire-ice.com/index.php?src=gendocs&ref=Boston,%20MA&category=boston

The hunt coordinator will be tallying up the scores from each of the teams while we dine, and an awards presentation will be held afterwards.

Speaking of teams...Perhaps you can all get a head start on choosing teams. Those below have confirmed thus far. It's idea to have at least one person with logistical skills and another with analytical skills (good at solving riddles). Maybe even come with a team name or team shirts.

Is the cost of the tour now $40 since it includes lunch?  Will we need a polaroid camera to take the pictures, or just scroll through pictures on the digital camera?

Honey -- I've certainly been called worse.......................

I have no real basis to pick a team (although, who would dare beat a team that had both Jan and Mini on it??) -- but I am happy to be a logistical person, as I do know my way around SOME areas of Boston pretty well (others -- not so much).  I might also be able to help with clues -- if a more intimate knowledge of the city is required.  PLUS -- I have the ability to call Sid (assuming that he's not working) who has a larger knowledge of Boston.

counting down the days now.....

are we having brunch the same morning?  Not speaking for everyone, but I'm a light eater (especially if we're having brunch then I certainly don't need a heavy lunch.)  Can we opt out of the lunch or just have chips to go with the beer?  Am I getting too pissy here?  I'm sorry.

Yes and no.

Yes, the cost of the tour with lunch is $40.

No, you can't opt out. I have already placed a deposit and confirmed with lunch.

Should we move the brunch to Sunday before Salem. The brunch is informal. We don't all necessarily need to arrive at the same time and/or eat togethor as long as we dine between 10am and 12pm.

...Will we need a polaroid camera to take the pictures, or just scroll through pictures on the digital camera?

Good point, Robert.  My vote would be to move the brunch to Sunday before the Salem tour.  Is the brunch already paid for or do we just pay when we get there?

3wks, 5 days and counting.....

Does anyone want to volunteer to be team captain? Or perhaps, someone would like to nominate someone as a team captain.

Let's start with 4 captains with teams consisting of 4 or 5 people.

I'll suggest these members as Captains:

Mum & Mini, Bocker, Nick, & Razorbill.

I suspect those four will have the most knowledge of Boston.

I have a suggestion.  Instead of picking people - I have this insane picture of elementary school team pickings with the last-man-standing syndrome - why not draw numbers from a hat?  All the 1's together, all the 2's, ect.  Totally random and a great (or disasterous) way to get to know one another.

There are a few couples (triples) in the group that will probably want to stay together: The Davids & Bonnie, Hubby, me and Mim, Jan and RAB.  Perhaps those groups should be the "base" teams and everyone else could draw numbers (or names, whatever).

Or, when we get there, we could just grab the people standing the closest to us and go.

Me too Dennis..I'm sure DF will have something to say to that, and after putting up with me for a week  he will be glad of other company..who knows, but I'm sure he will make it known if that's the case, he is not one to stay quiet now is he.. ;).

On second thoughts maybe I will need to keep an eye on him, I need to get him home is one piece for DF or DF will never talk to me again.. :D

I'll just go with the flow regarding how we work it out.

I'm in, of course. What the group is doing on any given day, I'm also doing/going/participating--except night tour in Salem.
Like Robert, I got a bit confused on the 10 am brunch at Fritz, followed by a noon tour w/lunch. Moved to Sunday instead?......is it official?  If not, I'll skip the brunch at Fritz and enjoy a Bloody Mary with  fellow AMGer, instead.

hi Mike.

it turns out we'll have coupons good for both days and it's not a 'group' function.  Just sort of meet and eat.  Special menu cards are being printed by the Chandler Inn. To ensure the waiter rings your bill correctly, you'll simply present one of these to the waiter when you order. Look for these coupons in your welcome bag. 2 will be included. One for Saturday, and one for Sunday.

I sure am glad you're coming.  It's been a year and you and Nick and I have a lot to talk about.

Lunch after our scavenger hunt will be at FiRE + iCE Grill & Bar and will be all you can eat.

Those below have confirmed thus far. It's idea to have at least one person with logistical skills and another with analytical skills (good at solving riddles). Maybe even come with a team name or team shirts.

Maybe they havn't confirmed but I'm sure we can count on the others to be there:

Ric and Thom
Curtis
Odyssey

Now I know we've never heard from these 4 but let's not count them out just yet.

(as far as I can tell, the only ones who won't be there are Creighton and Santi....

Mike,  as usual Nick waits for others to firmly plant their foot where it may not be a good idea....whatever the result of who " wins"   my group will have the best walking talking guide that grew up in that city a long time ago...but many moons after the "sites" were long established....

I don't care if I'm the last one picked, I fear I'm not going to be much help to whatever team gets stuck with me I'm on.

In fact they should be given a handicap.   ;)

Now as far as all this boasting coming from a certain female captain (who shall remain nameless  ::)), I've got a piece of advice.

"Don't let your mouth write checks you won't be able to keep.   :-*)

(Who's really looking forward to Boston!  Even if he's not on the winning team!)

P.S. Jan and me partners?  HUH?  (Who started that one? )  (There goes any chance I had of getting lucky.   >:()

Look, after spending 6 days at my house, 6 hours on an airplane with me, and 6 days in Boston (and you all now what 3 6's are a mark of), I suspect she's going to need a break!  Poor soul.
