How to get 6 months of meds up front?
« on: October 31, 2012, 03:35:25 pm »
In a few years I am looking to retire, and I may be living somewhere where I will be unable to make contact with 'the world' (even by mail) from November - April. I am wondering what provision insurance companies might make for 6 months of meds in advance, so I dont have to lay out an insane amount of cash and then get reimbursed after-the-fact.  Has anyone done this and figured out a way?

Milburn;

I have wanted to have a 2 - 3 month reserve of meds myself and while I have not done this yet, here is my plan.

My Pharmacist indicated that the insurance company will refill the prescription when the last prescription is at about 75%.  If I refill each prescription 3 weeks after the last one, then in 4 months I will have a one month reserve.  Over the course of a year you will have a 3 month reserve.

Again, I am new to this and have only refilled once, so we'll see how this goes.

I am wondering though - where will they have Bears, Beaches, Boats, Bodybuilding, Bourbon, Beer & Broadway....but no mail?

Seriously girl, I was expecting Barrow, Alaska when actually you're talking about the Meatrack. You really need six months of meds for that? Is there a problem using the Sayville Ferry once a month?

I don't see how you're gonna be that isolated since there are three post offices that I know of in the vicinity; one being in Cherry Grove proper on Bayview Walk.

Another one is in Ocean Beach and there is also the main Fire Island P.O.

It's not like they shut down in the off season since there are permanent residents who live there year round.

Even if you feel you'll run into problems with the mail, I'm sure you can borrow a handful of meds from any of the queens you might bump into while roaming the woods or dunes.

Aw, c'mon, your going to Fire Island, NY, not the Russian tundra.  There's a post office there.  Or get off your butt and take the 30 minute ferry ride to Sayville.

wow...for all of you smart asses who think your summer vaca gave you everything you need to know....the ferry stops running in the winter, the post office closes down (it's seasonal), and there are fewer than a dozen people in the Grove through the winter.  Thanks for your non-local expertise. For those of you who live in the comfort of your Manhattan apartment and dont know what island life is like in the winter, perhaps you might want to reconsider answering a serious question with flippant ignorance.

Why are you lying? I can go to the Sayville Ferry-Cherry Grove web site and access the full winter schedule. And really, to think that there's no mail service? Come on girl, pa-leez. Exactly where did you purchase this sense of entitlement?

1) Actually, if you can refer me to a winter weekday schedule, please do (For personal reasons, weekends won't work). And even if I could, that once a week quick-trip is shot to hell if there's a nor'easter or a the bay freezes over. I would prefer to NOT run out of meds.

2) I am not a girl.

http://www.sayvilleferry.com/schedule-grove.php

then use the pull down menu to view "November 26 - December 23, 2012" -- there is a weekly ferry in the morning and one in the afternoon, seven days a week.

You also have the option of the Fire Island Water Taxi, 631-665-8885 for pick up. You have to buy a six fare package for $125, so that's about $20 per trip.

The bottom line is that no private insurance, and certainly not ADAP, is going to provide you with a six month supply up front of HIV medications. I also fail to understand why you think Cherry Grove and/or The Pines lacks mail service in the winter. Do they also lack groceries? How do you plan to eat?

Thanks - actually, that still leaves a gap from Christmas to March, but not as bad as I feared.  Just FYI, there are NO groceries or stores open in Chery Grove from October through April, so it's case of a lot of stocking up.  Perhaps because I've lived on a remote Maine island before (Sheep Island - no ferry, just my own boat and no services at all) i am a little over-cautious.

I *have* purchased 6 months of medications in advance before - its not unheard of - its just that I had to lay out all the dough and get reimbursed after the six months was over, which is what i really trying to avoid.

I don't think that there's a ferry "gap" from Christmas to March, they simply haven't updated their web site that far in advance. And yes, I think you're being over cautious. You'll undoubtedly go fetch groceries in Sayville, which was my larger point, so just find a pharmacy there.

A winter at a deserted Belvedere sounds very Shining. Or better yet that spooky movie in Venice, The Comfort of Strangers.

Well howdy there Milburn. Did you manage to call the Sayville Ferry and ask if they stop all service during the winter? Or the water taxi? My guess would be "no".

If you think you're the first AIDS-infested queer to spend a winter in Cherry Grove or The Pines in the past 30 years since the epidemic began I honestly don't know quite what to say.

Here's the thing, really.

I'm a lazy bastard whenever I can get away with it. Rewrite or copy and paste? Screw rewrite, it's beer thirty BECAUSE IT'S ALWAYS.

There's NO SHAME in wanting an easy way. If you can AVOID having to go to the mainland, or use what you deem to be an unreliable postal service, then why not? Just because it's not the end of the world doesn't mean someone here can't or won't offer help.

That's a fallout from this disease's "fall from grace." Not everything involved in Living With HIV is a Big Thing anymore. And that's OK.

I think that sometimes we feel compelled to put on a persona here, of someone who wouldn't THINK of burdening a web site with trivia when Such Important Things are in play.

Yeah, important things are in play. And it's wise to prepare to be reminded of that, even in passing, and even as a joke, when asking for ways to make easiness... easier. Fine. But if you have a sense of humor about it, then others will too. So what if you want, say, to know the best way to score meds without leaving the house? Maybe there is an answer, maybe not. And yes, it's important to know that you might be asking this to a crowd who might not even have access to those drugs, and that you might be stepping on toes - even without intent.

But I honestly think that no question is too trivial to ask here. It's just important to try to remember perspective. I always find that leading with a sheepish wave works when I am asking my beloved where I put my glasses when I was drunkenly singing to him last night. Is there judgment? Oh yes indeed. But there's also a smile, and a kiss, and thank you for my glasses.

"Many people, especially in the gay community, turn to oral sex as a safer alternative in the age of AIDS. And with HIV rates rising, people need to remember that oral sex is safer sex. It's a reasonable alternative."

Milburn, have you thought about asking your doctor (and insurance company) if you can get and fill a script for six months of meds - explaining why you want six months worth? At the very least I would think you'd be able to get three or four months worth in one go, which would at least help.

After all, you would be going six months between labs and doctor appointments. If your doctor is on board with this, then he or she would likely try to help you figure out how to keep your med supply constant.

Just thought I'd put this out there in case you hadn't already considered enlisting your doctor's help with this. (and if you have already tried this, what was the outcome?)

By the way, I just realised this is in Living, instead of Treatments, which is the more appropriate forum for this thread. Moved.

How did Fire Island fare in Sandy?

Overall, not well....about a dozen houses washed out to sea, many more damaged.  Most damage in Fair Harbor, Ocean Bay Park, Davis Park.  The Island was breached in three places east of the Pines, one of which may be permanent ~ we'll know for sure after the nor'easter passes by this wednesday  :o  Remarkably, the Grove did very well - almost no damage to homes at all, in spite of the low elevation and narrow geography....but 30 years of dunes of gone. The Dunes protected the community, but also 'gave their lives,' and need to be rebuilt asap.  The Boardwalks are unsafe as they were lifted off of their footings, and the bulkheads/harbors on the bay side of the island were damaged from one end to the other.  You can no longer drive to Lighthouse beach, because Robert Moses Beach 5 is gone and the Parkway is undermined and buckled.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions...I'm one who plans things out in advance, and I have a good sense of the directions I can go in here.

i don't want to take any sides on this, but i have to agree with Miss P.  My co-worker is a true blood New Yorker, lived there most of his live.  I've heard more stories about New York and Fire Island that one probably needs to know or be aware of..  But even in the 'off season' time the ferry runs once a month in the 'off season'.  Also he advises that some folks that live there year around actually have boats that take them back and forth when they need to go as well.  So not completely isolated.

He just told me yesterday that the island was literally split into two islands after the storm.  I don't know about that because i havent paid a lot of attention.  i do know they took on a lot of damage.

Don't you have a reserve built up?  Ive only been on meds 2 years an have 4-5 month reserve (and thats from filing my prescription a bit early each month, not because I have skipped any).

Even if you go off to a deserted island, surely you can build a reserve.  Insurance companies let you refill a week before your meds run out.

Wow that's pretty dramatic. The breaks are on and after Barrett Beach?  Breaks are bad news...  Who is responsible for authorizing restoration?  And who does it - Army corps of engineers?

I have friends who lives in one of the remotest place in NZ, they have a cattle station at the back of beyond, they keep in touch with the world via radio.

They live half way up a mountain, this is a place that gets snowed in at least 4/5 months of the year, rains about 10 months of the year, and their emergency service is the flying doctor, they get their mail delivered every week, not always on the same day but the mail never fails to get through, it's the same with their groceries, every month without fail.

Now I don't know much about Cherry Grove /Fire Island being a country girl from NZ but it would seem to me that we look after our families a hell of a lot better than your lot do on Fire Island.

I'm sorry but I can't believe they would shut down the postal service for 6 months.. I just can't, and if they do then maybe spending those 6 months on the main land is the way to go.

I rather think that given the circumstances re: the devastation in that area, I would think twice before committing myself to living in what might be a disaster area for  quite some time, possibly straining an already compromised infrastructure and impeding relief efforts.

That was a long long sentence.

For the curious... I'll never understand how the beach homes on pilings survive. Matchbox on toothpicks...
