the HIV/HPV connection
« on: September 03, 2012, 12:56:56 am »
I've been reading about the connection between HIV and HPV in gay men, but I'm a little confused as to how it alters the risk level associated with contracting HIV...

My boyfriend is HIV+ (he's taking his meds regularly and blood tests done 3 weeks ago showed he remained undetectable at less than 10 copies/ml and) and we always practice safe sex.  He does, however, have some warts from HPV that he is in the process of having removed.  I know that most sexually active adults get HPV at some point in their lives and it's likely that I am/will be one of them, but would this have a big effect on my risk for contracting HIV?

Even though we will always have safe sex, it's a big relief to know the bf's numbers are so low and that that makes my risk a little lower, too--especially since I'm the receptive partner.  I asked the doctor if my bf's presumed HPV would have an effect on risk transmission for me and he said that in this case it really wouldn't, but he was also mentioning the risk being higher with open sores, etc., so I wasn't sure he really understood my question (I'm living abroad and this was all in my second language).  Can anybody fill me in?

Your boyfriend's HPV will not increase your risk for hiv. You do need to be aware however, that HPV is transmitted through skin-to-skin contact, UNLIKE hiv.

Keep using condoms for anal intercourse and you'll be just fine where hiv is concerned. Really!

HIV is certainly character-building. It's made me see all of the shallow things we cling to, like ego and vanity. Of course, I'd rather have a few more T-cells and a little less character. Randy Shilts
