Title: "My mother, who got me into this business...
Post by: Strayboy74 on May 07, 2007, 11:18:44 pm
...always used to tell me...  "Make 'em beg for more, then don't give it to 'em!"

But I'm not my mother!" -Gypsy Rose Lee

Last night, I surrendered my old stomping grounds to the claim of the younger, more agile (yeah right), A&F wearing high maintenance fags of sonoma county (sonomabeach - I'm sure you understand).  Last night I received my final fanfare as the Headliner at the Guerneville Celebrity MotorLodge and Lounge.  It was bittersweet.  My performance began with the standards that made me a legend on the river.

My song selections for the evening:

Hallelujah - Made famous by Rufus Wainright
Walking In Memphis - Written by Marc Cohn and slaughtered by Cher
American Pie - written by  Don McLean version and slaughtered by Maddy
Proud Mary - In honor of Tina and sung with a dear and old friend of mine I just met last night, Dell - You're my Ike Turner, baby!  Your voice and harmonies beat my spirit down down like an abusive husband takin' care of his backtalkin' wife; helping me to find true ownership of the black rhythm and soul I could only borrow from the marriage of our pain and triumph.

and finally...

Purple Rain - ressurecting the sorrow, the pain, and the hunger of soul that once brought someone to ask me in lustful tears whether I can fuck as well as I sing.

It was a sad night.  And there were many goodbyes.  And now I seek a warm fred elsewhere, and I will make my mark again.

Hear me roar!

-joseph

Who made 'em beg for more,
and gave it to 'em.

Dell and I sang it like CCR shoulda.

I do have an excellent, seasoned voice, and a vocal ability of 2 1/2 octaves.  (and if this makes me sound conceited, I freaking earned it)

Although Brent only heard me sing when i was liquored up, and I had abandoned technique and talent for Meatloaf's Paradise By the Dashboard Lights.  (the music I select, depends on how much I've had to drink, how familair I am with the sound equipment, and the competition I sense around me)  Usually I start with the more vocally difficult songs, and work my way to the James Brown-esque shit the more I drink. :)

Oh yeah, and I also sang Wicked Game - at the request of several people who missed me singing it.

Lots of applause.

My ego is full. :)

I love singing with other people - especially people who know how to sing and don't imitate the artist with parrot-like precision.  I like people who can work within harmonies, and can blend with others.  Even if they can't, and they know the melody, I can harmonize around them. :)  That has to be one of my all-time favorite things to do.

One of my favorite songs is by Sweet Honey In the Rock and it's called "Wanting Memories"  I just love working freely around their harmonies. :)  I'll email the song if you're interested, sometime.

I hope you will be a feature at the Sept.gathering..people like me who can't carry a tune in a wash bin would love to hear someone who can really sing..
....Thunter is coming to SF I believe... lets put you guys on the program for "meet and greet"
I really like Tina Turner .. perhaps a good solid rendition of "Body Heat" would get the party warmed up....

I can't sing very well at all.  Odd considering I took music lessons for nine years.

well, you may have developed KS lesions on your vocal cords.  Substandard poppers do that, I understand.

One thing I am not is cheap with my video head cleaner.  I'm strictly a platinum girl, preferably imported.
