My father just got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer
« on: July 07, 2010, 08:50:12 pm »
Last week. He had no symptoms whatsoever until about 6 weeks ago.
But the cancer is already stage IV . The tumor is 7cm and inoperable. The cancer has already metastasized to the liver and peritoneum. He doesn't want to ask his doctor for a prognosis.
From what I have read, he doesn't have long with that kind of diagnosis. I'm flying 6000 miles this weekend to see him for a week.

Sad news this Mad. You have my sympathies.

You have read correctly, your father's prognosis is very grim. May the remaining time you and he have be as good as can be under the circumstances.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father. My mother died last year of pancreatic cancer. Hers was also inoperable but had not metastasized. Spend as much time with him as you can.

As everyone has said, my thoughts are with you.  I didn't know much about that cancer until Patrick Swayze got it.  It is a very scary cancer in that it is almost always diagnosed very late.  I don't want to get off subject on wishing you and your family the best-- just curious whether if CT scans, MRI's, or PET scans done once say every 5 to 10 years after a certain age would pick up some of these very hard to detect cancers like this one and ovarian cancer which is also usually detected very late.

I'll be thinking about you and your family.  I'm glad to hear you're going to see him.  Try to stay healthy yourself--forcing yourself to eat when I'm sure you won't feel like it due to all the emotional stress.

Hello Mad,

So sorry to read of your father's diagnosis.

If you've not heard of Randy Pausch, who was a professor at CMU and brought lots of attention to pancreatic cancer, here's a link to his site. http://download.srv.cs.cmu.edu/~pausch/

Here's Diane Sawyer's piece about him on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZbOQqtDAW0&feature=related

You and your father may find you want to watch his "Last Lecture" video. He was a motivating prof, citizen and advocate.

I'm glad you have a week to spend with him. Family is great medicine.

My father passed away yesterday in the hospital in Clichy. I flew again to see him on saturday night and was with him his last 3 nights though he was no longer conscious the last 2. He passed a couple hours after I left the small room, my uncle and aunt were with him. The funeral is on saturday.

I am so sorry about the loss of your father. It is one of the defining moments in a person's life, that.  I hope you have family and friends to grieve with, and who understand the singular crazy that comes with such a profound loss.

Thanks to all who replied. I spent another week in France to give a power of attorney to my sister and see the notary who will oversee the liquidation of my father's estate. This is a process that will take about 6 months to finish :-( We will be selling my father's house in which I spent almost 20 years.  I didn't fail to get sick as usual on nearly all my foreign trips, with a nasty gastro enteritis that kept me in bed for days, followed by a horrible cold. I flew back last week end and am back at work as of yesterday.

I am so sorry to hear about your father's diagnosis. My dad died little more than nine years ago, from a similarly virulent and fast-moving cancer. It is an awful thing to go through, and it changes a person. But  you have that strength inside you to deal with this. I know I didn't think I had it, but I found myself stronger than I ever imagined.

Just thinking of you in this difficult time.

Don't know how I missed this earlier...

So sorry about the loss of your Dad.   Pancreatic cancer is very cruel indeed... I lost my own Mother to it in 1965, and my "fill-in" Mom last week (she was 88).

May he rest in peace, and may you find comfort and solace for your pain.

Hugs, Alan

Madbrain-
Sorry to hear about your fathers diagnosis. Have a safe trip.  You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
