A little bit worried :(

Hi Jim,

Thank you for this website! You are amazing.

I just had a sexual encounter that is worrying me a little bit. I am usually very cautious with HIV and other STDs since i've had worrisome experiences in the past. I basically have narrowed down my sexual activities to low risk (receiving oral).

To sum it up: i was receiving oral sex for a while from a guy. He ejaculated on his stomach, and in a moment of weakness, i grabbed a little bit of his sperm and used it to masturbate and ejaculate on him. The masturbation with his sperm lasted about 10-20 seconds. I quickly realized what I had just done and went to the bathroom to wash myself off with soap. (if it makes any difference i am circumcised). The guy i had the encounter with seems pretty responsible, he's been on prep for a few years and I believe he last tested negative just two months ago. Even with that being said, if there is any chance he has HIV, do i have any chance of contracting it in this way?

Should i be considering a round of PEP? (I am not on prep since I never have anal sex)

Thank you!

Jim Allen:
Hiya,

Relax, receiving a blowjob isn't an HIV risk and neither would be masturbating even after contact with fluids.

Here's what you need to know to avoid HIV infection:
Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, every time, no exceptions. Consider talking to your healthcare provider about taking PrEP as an additional layer of HIV protection

Keep in mind that some sexual practices described as ‘safe’ in terms of HIV might still pose a risk for transmission of other STI's, so please do get tested regularly and at least yearly for STI's including but not limited to HIV and test more frequently if unprotected intercourse occurs

Also, note that it is possible to have an STI and show no signs or symptoms and, the only way of knowing is by testing.

Kind regards

Jim
