Title: Mixed-Status Couple
Post by: jsherrick on November 06, 2009, 01:35:29 pm
I recently met an hiv positive guy, I'm hiv negative, and I'm very serious about pursuing a relationship with him. I was wondering if there's some long term mixed status couples out there that could give me some feedback. Anything would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Jesse

Jesse,
My partner and I have been together for 7 years.  We do not see ourselves as a mixed couple, we are just a couple, we love eachother and we would do anything to protect the other one from harm, with that being said when we have sex we have "safer" sex to make sure that I am not infected.  It is not something we talk about in long discussions or anything like that, when we first discussed him being HIV, he said "I don't ever want to pass this on to you", with that being said we do what we need to so that doesn't happen.
My partner has just started treatment in the last 45 days, before that he did not under go any treatment since he was first diagonosed which was in the mid 1990's.  Along with starting treatment, we talked more about his options, the meds, how they make him feel, how his overall feeling is about being positive, and what we can do to live a happy, fulfilled life together and grow old and grey (or should say greyer) together.
The best advice I can give is to go into the relationship with an open and understanding heart and mind.  Do not let the HIV define him or your relationship.  Be there for when he needs to talk about it and be patiant if he doesn't.  Good luck to both of you.
