Title: Fun, fun, and more fun....
Post by: J.R.E. on October 08, 2011, 07:21:08 am
Hello All,.....

Well,... it's been a busy, anxious, and interesting, last couple of weeks for me  As everyone knows quite well, the economy is still so very sluggish, employers are hesitant to hire,( even though their sitting on wads of cash) and as a result, the remaining employees are pretty much forced to undertake extra work. In most cases their told if they don't like it, they can leave.  By the way, this was not said to me.

At one time, our company employed over 330 people, we are now down to less than 250.  We are so top heavy it's pathetic. ( that's another story though)

I was approached by my boss 2 weeks ago ( by phone on the 11:00 to 7 shift). She stated that the CEO/ President of the company would like me to learn some new software.   I became immediately defensive, as the software program, I am about to learn, was previously being done by someone who was fired, about a month ago. This person was also making   $5.00 more per hour than I currently am making, and  only there for about 2 years !  I've been here for close to 15 years.

The woman they fired, who was responsible for this data entry, was behind by 9,000 different items, going back to January of this year. She never placed this data into AOD !! She put this info in her filing cabinet,( out of sight) and it was discovered, while she was on vacation. Thus her firing upon returning to work.

Upon learning this little tidbit, ( and visually witnessing the data that was never entered) I  said to my boss, that it was not my job, and I refuse to do catch up work for someone, that was not performing their job duties.  And, she agreed. She stated that I would not have to take on that responsibility.

I reminded my boss, that I haven't had a pay raise since 2008, and since that time, have already taking on added responsibility. I also stated to her, that I felt that by taking on this new challenge, that a pay raise of some sorts, would be justified, despite the fact that no one had received a pay raise.

Of course, her response, was "I will see what I can do for you. but can't promise anything"  My response back was," I can't promise anything either." I do like my boss. She tries her best for all of us.  I also know that she is under an extreme amount of pressure.

Well, We spent about 4 hours learning this new software.  It didn't go the way it was supposed to.

My boss stated to me, that she and myself , would spend a Friday morning, in the conference room, along with Plant operation manager, plant operations supervisor, and the renovations manager. We would have tele-conferencing from someone at the software company. We would be able to interact and ask questions, about the software, while watching the actual software usage on a large flat screen, that was in the conference room.  This never took place.

I, and my boss was instructed how to use this, by one of the maintenance workers, that took over when this woman was fired.  He didn't have a clue about the software either, but he did try his best, to instruct us. I went into this cold turkey without a clue.

Anyway,...

This software that I've already learned is called AOD.  Which stands for Answers on Demand.  It is a software that is used in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Hospitals may use it also. I am using the "Facilities Management" Part of the software.

Long story short,.... I am still working in the same department, the same 11:00 to 7:00 shift.  In addition to doing this new job for plant operations, I am still doing periodic work for HR, Culinary services, and Marketing, besides my normal duties of updating campus census, which is forever changing.

I still haven't received an increase in salary. I will be reminding my boss again of that shortly, every opportunity I get.

The reason I was selected by The CEO for this job, was because of my previous experience in the Plant Operations department, and because I was familiar with the more technical mechanical terms.

I left that department in October of 2004, And have been in the position I hold now, since that time.

Long story short again,.... It's been about a week and a half, and all is going well. I am doing exactly what I am supposed to doing and nothing more.  Everyone seems pleased and happy, with the job I am doing. It would still be nice to see the paycheck grow a little.  :-\

I still wish I could win the Power ball tonight.  I will have to do this for about 2 years and 2 months, before I can tell this company, to kiss my grits. One day at a time....  :)

Its just such a glorious win win situation for middle to large companies at the moment.
If they have a half decent balance sheet they have access to historically cheap loans plus the can squeeze existing workers with the promise off redundancy, reduce wage costs by not meeting cost off living payments and so it goes on. The corporate governance off so many US and UK companies stinks, the board is happy and the large shareholders ,penion funds , are not interested in there responsibilities as owners off the companies. Short term take the money and run Capitalists have no love off there country and a level off greed matched by Russian oligarchs.

Good news to report here too.  Persistence pays,  I got myself a $1.00 an hour increase. This still barely compensates for no pay raises in the last 3 years, but it sure comes in handy now. This took effect on Jan 1st

Meanwhile.... last Friday, we had a company known as Sodexo, came into our company, and big changes are taking place !  :o

Congrats.  90?  Wow, now that's some long term planning ;D  For me, 25 would be luck.  30 was unlikely, 40 would NEVER happen and now I'm only a few years from 50.  Suddenly, 90 doesn't seem that old....lol

Take care and best wishes.
