International student in UK and Portugal
« on: April 17, 2017, 12:43:21 pm »
Hello everybody. This is my first topic.

I have been living with HIV for the past 4 years, and I started my treatment last year. I currently live in Brazil (my home country), where I can get my medication for free. Right now, I am almost done with my master studies and I am thinking about applying to a PhD program in the UK or Portugal. The problem is that I am not getting enough information about meds, exams and everything else. I am trying to gather as much information as I can before starting to apply and I'd really appreciate if anyone could give me any advice, information about costs or anything you think it is important.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Welcome to the forum.

I moved your post as a number of things are being asked and there simply is more traffic in this section of the forum.

As for the UK and HIV treatment, well look more specifically England at least since October 2012, has that all HIV treatment has been free to all who need it, regardless of your immigration status. I've included a link to the Terrence Higgins Trust that have a page with additional information on this that you might find useful.

However of course next to HIV treatment other healthcare comes with costs, I've included the below link that goes into some detail in relation to the subject and visa stuff that might help get you started. https://www.gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application/overview

I have no idea about Portugal but if you find out do share and let us know as i have it on my list of places to piss off to as i get older.  I don't speak Portuguese however i figure that I was okay last time i was in Portugal and I simply got by just fine by shouting loudly in Dutch if there was any confusion and using hand gestures  :P
