I recently had to travel to another city by car. I had put my suitcase, in which my meds were packed, in the trunk of the car.
No problem on the way out, but on the journey home, the temperatures were in the triple digits.
My Norvir melted. Well actually, partially melted. They capsules were deformed and were sort of stuck in the pill box.
So, I put them in the fridge. Once they were cool, they came out of the pill box without a problem and hadn't leaked.
I continued to take them, but was wondering how melted Norvir has to get before it is not useable.
Anyone have any idea how melted is too melted?

I'm thinking they're probably OK Mother, but if you can have them replaced with no enormous fuss, it might be worth doing.

I don't know Mark. Maybe you should call the pharmacy, and see what they say. But if they were melted...Ouch !

Aren't they supposed to be refrigerated at all time?
When I travel, I used a small cooler bag with and ice pack.
I am off that one now, but I still have some left and there is a sticker on the bottle from the pharmacy that clearly state do not freeze , but keep in refrigerator.

Norvir degrades under thermal, alkaline and oxidative conditions (air/moisture). Critically, the active ingedient degrades relatively fast at temperatures over 35 deg C (95 deg F). This is in dry air, no direct sunlight. Humidity/direct sunlight may well increase degree of degredationt.
I would not use clumped capsules.

Mark, I have lots of excess Norvir (2 months worth) if you'd like me to bring it to Mexico City, but I realize that may be too late.

I was going to say the same thing. I have a ton of extra Norvir that I could overnight to you if you need it.

Ah....well, then. Let's just hope I got by with it. Just finished an entire month's supply that was that way. They semi-melted into a giant clump in the bottle that I carefully plucked individual pills off of once I was able to get some of them loose enough to come out of the bottle. Guess we'll find out at my next labs, eh?

Thanks Philly and Doxie for the offer, but I only melted about four days worth of meds. They were the ones I had put in the pill box.
The others were in the fridge at home, safe and unmelted.
The bottles do say they can be stored outside of refrigeration for a month, but only at temperatures of 75 degrees F or less. I don't know what that is centigrade.
The problem is, even my house doesn't stay below 75 degrees. Right now, with the air conditioner going, it is 82.
Evaporative cooling isn't a precise science, but 82 is much more comfortable than 103, which it is outside.
So I keep my meds and my pill box in the frig.
From now on, when I travel, I will keep them with me in the car. not in the trunk.
Lesson learned.

That is interesting news. I hope they do come out with a pill form that doesn't need refrigeration. It would be just so much easier.

If you have to do a lot of traveling without access to refrigeration or good a/c you might want to consider getting a prescription of liquid Norvir for those times.
It tastes pretty nasty (like most meds) but it doesn't need refrigeration and last about 10 months.
You can also try mixing it with Ensure or chocolate milk to lessen the taste.
