Started PEP after possible exposure - extremely scared
« on: April 29, 2017, 01:19:02 pm »
Hi everyone,

I made the mistake of letting someone "dip" but it lasted for like 20 minutes and he was going in and out. I am a male and was the receptive partner. I was told by him that he was negative and that he'd send me the results. After not hearing from him all day I went to a local clinic and got PEP (Tivicay and Truvada). I took my first dose at 1pm the day after possible exposure (day before at 8:30am). He did not ejaculate in me. I haven't been able to sleep since it happened (three days ago) and have still not heard from him (and don't expect to).

I understand from reading other posts that there is a risk since I was the receptive partner and that their was contact. I'm writing this to ease my mind because I'm 22, not out to anyone, and very scared. I just need to know, is everything going to be ok and will taking PEP the way i'm supposed to most likely work? I'd appreciate any comments that can help ease my mind. From everything I read it looks like I won't be infected and that there possible wasn't even exposure but my mind won't let me stop thinking about it.

Presuming that the "dipping" was unprotected, yes, you did have a risk if your partner was HIV positive (which we on these forums always presume to be the case, for risk assessment purposes, regardless of any claims to the contrary).

PEP is very, very successful, if started within the 72-hour window.  Since you started PEP well within that window, the odds indicate that you will test negative for HIV antibodies over this incident, if you adhere to the prescribed PEP regimen.

Thank you so much for the reply! Is there anything I can't specifically do while on PEP? I masturbate a lot, take aderrall (prescribed by primary doc), and drink coffee. Are all of these things ok? I told the clinic doc about the aderrall but don't recall her saying anything wrong with it (especially since she gave me the PEP).

Well, I wouldn't advise that you engage in unprotected sex! :o

Otherwise, I can't think of much of anything else you shouldn't do (within reason and moderation, of course).

I'm sure masturbation and coffee are fine (but don't drink coffee while you masturbate:  you don't want to burn yourself). :o

If you are concerned about specific medication interactions, check with the medical professional who prescribed you the PEP.

Ha! Thanks for the humor that I definitely need right now :).  One more question. I just started getting some tooth pain and I'm wondering if I should go to the dentist for this. Part of me thinks it'll go away but I also want to be cautious to make sure it's not an infection that could comprise my immune system. Should I wait it out to see if it goes away or is it possible that this is something that could stop my PEP regimen from working. Also, should I consult the doc who prescribed my PEP first since they know what medicines I can take (if the dentist prescribes me antiobiotics for a potential infection).

I don't believe there is any reason why a sore tooth (even if caused by an infection) would compromise your PEP effectiveness.

If a tooth bothers you, see a dentist as soon as practicable in order to deal with the tooth issue itself.

Yes, it's okay to check with the doctor who prescribed you PEP for any potential antibiotic interactions with your PEP regimen.  I don't believe he or she will indicate that there are any, but that's a call best and appropriately left to a medical professional.
