Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

I will start by saying, I recognise I need to get tested and I am working towards this, just more courage needed as I am worried I am already under 200 CD4 but first I just need to rationalise something in my own mind........

I had a "risky" encounter exactly 4 months ago, unprotected vaginal sex, after about 3 weeks I had what appears to be OHL (yes self diagnosed), after 8 weeks I had small bumps on my face and I have had various temperatures etc....Now after 4 months I have raised nodes in my neck and armpits, I have around 50 small bumps on my face (looks like MC), I still have OHL, I have diarroah and any number of things and I have more or less convinced myself I am posotive, although the symptoms point to advanced AIDS rather than sercoconversion.

Is it likely I (assuming I am posotive) that I got infected back in May from my encounter or have I been carrying this about with me for years, in the past I have been relatively careful and only had a small number of partners all long term, I am a 40 year old Hetrosexual, no drug usage

How do you know that your CD4 is under 200?

You haven't made clear if you are a man or a woman. It makes a very big difference in terms of potential risk. A man is much less vulnerable to transmission via intercourse than is a woman.

HIV is not something to guess about, so stop playing doctor with yourself without a license. And you don't have to build up courage to get tested. You can go in with your knees quaking and heart thumping like a lot of other people and still get the test done. And these days depending on where you do it you may have an answer in as little as 20 minutes.

So far you aren't reporting anything physically in terms of symptoms which is in anyway HIV specific.

Please clarify if I am missing something here.

Thanks for you for replying so quickly,

I am male, I dont know my CD4 is less than 200, its just I understood that things like OHL and MC only occur when the CD4 is very low, although again from reading it  doesnt seem likely they could be so low so quickly (several months)

OK, so you're torturing yourself with guesswork. HIV is not something to guess about. Ever.

The odds in a single incident such as this are very much in your favor against transmission having occured. Get your quaking butt in and get the test done. Odds are you will test negative.

But you do need to learn from this experience. No excuses about not using a condom. Everytime you have intercourse no matter whom it is with you need to be wearing latex. No exceptions and no stories, please.
