Alere Determine HIV1/2 Antibody Test 3-month
« on: October 27, 2013, 09:30:28 pm »
Hi Guys.  I am a guy from Southeast Asia.  Early July this year, During my insertive vaginal sex with a CSW, the condom broke and the friction cause a rim-cut on my penis (open wound).  I noticed the pain but stupidly continued for another 1 minute.  When I pulled out, I noticed the open wound was soaked with vaginal fluid.

5th week from exposure, I got Very Very severe sore throat, coated tongue and 2 weeks of searing pain in thighs/buttocks.  The sore throat and coated tongue last until today (2.5months) and still counting.  ENT doctors haven't found anything yet.

Tests: I only managed to drag myself to test at 94-day mark post exposure.  It was Alere Determine HIV 1/2 antibody test (3rd gen they said) (Alere seemed to buy the Determine from Abbot not be used in the US, but used in Canada and Africa).  The result is negative.  I tested using the same Alere at 96 and 108 days, thankfully it's negative again.

Since the throat is still ongoing (am a healthy guy and no sore throat has lasted more than 1 week for me previously), I feel there's something wrong with my immune system.

I'd be grateful if you could give me some kind advices here, from your experiences and I believe some of you do have medical background.

1) All the tests I've had are only antibody test (by Alere), NO PCR, NO Duo/Combo.   Would I need another Type of test, given my Horrible accident?

2) Would you have any experiences with Alere Determine HIV1/2 (its website said it could test for HIV 1/2 subtypes and group ), but didn't mention about group M/N.   Is there any other test that could fill this gap for group M/N?

3) The throat problem (choking me for breath, sore and burning) is killing me every day for 2.5 months and on going.  Would it be somehow HIV-related?

4) Could I consider I dodged a bullet or I still have a hidden time bomb?  my worst fear is I blindly infect people around me.

Thank you so much.

Sincerely yours

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. Most who are infected will test positive by 6 weeks. For various reasons a small number will take longer and that is why we follow the CDC recommendation to test at 3 months for a conclusive negative result.

The test you used for HIV testing are reliable and conclusive . You do not have HIV so if you are sick go see your doctor and find out why , its not HIV .

Thank you Jeff

I wish I could move on too, but seemed to be haunted by the Horrible accident and the ongoing strange throat problems.

And I read Alere Determine Rapid antibody HIV1/2 could test for subtypes and Group O, but not group M/N from their website.  Therefore I felt there's possibly a gap.

Would any other type of test be able to better back up the Rapid Antibody Test at this moment?

I am really scared of infecting other.  No more sex, and of coz I don't even think about relationship, let alone marriage.

The test was more than adequate . You do not have HIV .

If you don't trust the results then go to a testing center and retest or get some counseling for your fears . If you were at risk we would tell you without hesitation so rest assured that you have tested negative for HIV . Its safe to move on and put this behind you .

Thank you Jeff.

I will try to move on, though it will be a long process of getting it out of mind.

God bless.
