I know that concurrent STD's can increase the risk thru unprotected intercourse even with an undetectable HIV viral load.

However reading carefully the HPTN 052 study I noticed that concurrent STD's of the positive and negative partner, except hepatitis, weren't an exclusion criteria of the study, which means that participants could have for example asymptomatic herpes.

The study is still ongoing and lasts until 2015. But if I don't miss something, asymptomatic STD's without sores or inflammation, according to this study,don't seem to have an impact on the 96% risk reduction percentage of this trial.

This means that in the absence of any STD the risk may be even lower.
