Welcome to the "Do I Have HIV?" POZ forum.

This special section of the POZ forum is for individuals who have concerns about whether or not they are HIV positive. Individuals are permitted to post up to three questions or responses in this forum.

Ongoing participation in the "Do I Have HIV?" forum (posting more than three questions or responses) requires a paid subscription, with secure payments made via PayPal.

A seven-day subscription is $9.99, a 30-day subscription is $14.99 and a 90-day subscription is $24.99.

Transmission through cuts

I was having sex with a woman while wearing a condom, and after we had finished, I looked down to see that my balls and the top of my crotch were covered in blood. I asked her about it, and she apologized and said she must still be on her period even though she thought it had ended

Normally I wouldn't be worried since HIV and other STDs that are also spread by blood cannot infect without entering an open wound, but I had shaved by balls about one or two hours before the encounter and had cut myself accidentally, causing it to bleed for about 10 minutes before stopping. The previous day I had done the same thing on my groin, but the cut was less severe and seemed to bleed less. Both of the cuts were not visible after they stopped bleeding, so I left it at that. When cleaning her blood off of me after sex, I noticed that the blood from her had dried and taken the shape of the cuts as if it had partially entered the wound. I washed the cuts off with soap and water after that. Both of the cuts were bleeding slightly when I washed them off, but were not bleeding at all before the encounter.

I noticed that most HIV transmission information will show that an "open" or "fresh" cut is a risk if HIV-infected blood comes in contact with it. What is really defined as open or fresh? Is a cut that is an hour old be considered to be "fresh"?

HIV is not transmitted outside its host. You didn't have an exposure.

Even though your nick or whatever from shaving would look open to you, your skin virtually immediately begins forming a covering not visible to the eye. What happened to you is a not infrequent occurrence. HIV is a fragile virus and I have never known of a case of transmission to occur in that manner. It's safe to say you won't make history by becoming the first to get infected in that manner.

Just keep using those condoms everytime for intercourse and  you will be well and effectively protected against the sexual transmission of HIV.

There's no need for testing nor for further concern.
