Condom Use
« on: October 06, 2006, 10:39:42 pm »
Hello Everyone-
I recently had an experience with a girl in which we made out a bit and I fingered her vagina for a very short amount of time (literally 20 seconds).  I have done my research on transmitting HIV through fingering on this forum and I have found that it is not possible.  I did not have any bleeding cuts or wounds on my hand, she was not menstrating, and I did not penetrate her vagina much at all (I bassically stayed around the lips).  However, I am wondering about the chances and likelihood of transmitting HIV through the mucouse membrane in the eye if I happened to wipe my eyes.  I washed my hands maybe 15 minuetes after the interaction but I do not remember if I had wiped my eyes with the fingers I used during that time- it was quite late and I had some drinks.  I do not know the HIV status of this girl, so I may be making a big to do about nothing.  However, if she is HIV positive, and I did wipe my eyes with those fingers lets say 5 minuetes after the interaction, what are the chances of transmission?  Thank you for your time and help- Wally

There was not a risk of contracting HIV in what you did. Like you already know, fingering does NOT transmit HIV infections. You would not have rubbed your eye ball for one, because of an automatic reflex to shut your eye lids when rubbing the eye. Even if you did have vaginal secretions on your finger, those secretions are not the ones to worry about, it's the cervical secretions that carry the virus.

Just to get this straight-  I am not sure if I would shut my eyeball when I would rub them- I often do keep my eyes open when I rub them.  However, are you saying that the vaginal fluid that carries HIV only comes from deep within the vagina?  Like I said, I did not penetrate deep in the vagina- I penetrated only about an inch within the female.  I did however have vaginal fluid on my finger from an inch within the vagina and from the vagina lips.  If I did touch my eye ball with my eye open, there is no risk in doing so condsidering I did not penetrate deep within the vagina??  Thannks for your help

Wally,

As Rodney says, what you describe is no risk for hiv transmission. Hiv is a fragile, difficult to transmit virus that is primarily transmitted INSIDE the human body, as in unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse.

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL STIs together. To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with a sexually transmitted infection.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

If you're not yet having intercourse (being sexually active), you don't need any sort of testing. However, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results. Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Wally,

I've merged your new thread into your original thread - where you should post all your additional thoughts or questions. It helps us to help you when you keep all your additional thoughts or questions in one thread.

If you need help finding your thread when you come here, click on the "Show own posts" link under your name in the left-hand column of any forum page.

Please also read through the Welcome Thread so you can familiarize yourself with our Forum Posting Guidelines. Thank you for your cooperation.

Aside from herpes (also known as cold sores), you don't really need to worry about sexually transmitted infections while kissing. You certainly won't become infected with hiv through kissing.

Hey Guys-
I was wondering if anyone knew abotu the idea that a condom thats been in a hot place no longer works- is that true?  I had sex witha female and used a condom but the condom had been in a hot place for about two or three weeks (a car with lea seats in the summer, drive around with windows down).  Should I be worried?  Thanks

This is the second time I've had to merge your threads - get with the program!

Keeping a condom in a hot place is not recommened because it MIGHT make the condom break more easily when it is used. In your case, the condom did NOT break. If it did, you WOULD have noticed. It is VERY obvious when a condom breaks - they pretty much shred.

Please read through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you know the score on condom usage.

You're A-OK this time out. The condom didn't break and so you were protected against hiv transmission.

Thanks Ann-
Just to get this straight- If the condom didn't break, a condom that has been in a warm place is still effective in protecting against STDs?  The only reason I ask again is because ur reply stated specifically I am ok against HIV (the purpose of this sight) but I am also ok with all of the STDs?  I am also concerned with other STDs... THanks for your help!  Wally

Wally,

As long as the condom did not break you were protected against hiv. However, the other STIs are much easier to transmit and wearing a condom isn't necessarily 100% protection against them - herpes for example. There are plenty of websites that have further information on the other STIs. This is an hiv website.
