Noisy Neighbors from Hell!
« on: November 16, 2006, 09:11:54 pm »
Has anyone ever lived in an apartment complex where there is someone above them that is rude and does not respect the person below them? Well this will be my third time around living with wonderful neighbors above me that have children and have no respect for us. I have a routine that if they make alot of noise I bang on the floor. Well I received a bang on my door wanting to know why I banged on there floor. EXCUISE ME the running back and forth and acting like the place is on fire is a little too much. Next time it will be the police called.

Hey Jerry,

Do you remember when you was a child and you used to run and play? Keep that in mind.

Eldon you know I was a child and I was brought up with a beating from hell if I ever made noise my parents always put me to bed at a decent time. To me there is no farther figure involved and the lady can not control her kids. Then again I guess that is one reason I never choose to be with a woman and have children. Also I was brought up to respect my neighbors and if you have ever had a noisy neighbor what would you do? I will be damn if I'm going to buy some ear plugs to just please her. Lisa and Dan are coming down the 1st of the month to visit they can get to witness the noise from hell for themselves.

Hey Jerry,

I do understand your frustration. Did you talk to your neighbors up above and let them know that there noise level is a bit unbearable?

We had the discussion tonight after I had enough with all the noise and she came down to have a talk with me. But she said that we were making all the noise yeah right. Maybe she is just mad she is not getting any sex like we are! LOL  She just has no control over her kids and does not want to co-operate with the problems with her own children. But I will keep my peace with her till it happens again and hopefully I will have a few witness's here to bouch for the actions from her.

God, you've hit a subject near and dear to me.  I lived through the same thing while in college.  I would get so frustrated, I'd imagine ripping the kids legs off while I covered my head w/ a pillow trying to take a nap.  I don't think it's right when neighbors infringe on your right to peace and quiet - kids need to learn this especially!  I wouldn't call the police but the landlord first.  Unfortunately being a disrespectful child or parent isn't a crime.

Hey Jerry,

I agree with Jason. I would call the landlord first and make a complaint if the issue continues after discussing it with her.

Well the property manger has been for warned about the happenings and she refues to do anything about the problem. It is just a shame we are paying for the place here and the complex is based on your income and we pay far to much to have to deal with all the noise that goes on above untill another unit comes available we will take one on the third floor if we can.

Problem also is that we signed a 1 year lease and can't move until our lease is up.

I think, (don't know for sure) but up here there are requirements as to what percentage of the floor above anyone needs to be covered with carpeting. If they are covered with carpeting-move on, the place isn't built too well! The rugrats may well end up in your laps!

When sleeping whilst elephants are rampaging upstairs, I've gotten in the habit of leaving a fan running in the bedroom, pointed away from the bed; either box fan or tabletop works, as long as it makes the "white noise."

Good luck, boys.  I feel (and hear) your pain! (although in reality, I don't hear it so much if I medicate myself) :P

oh that sucks!  Never been in a complex with kiddies... Never would neither...  Next dont do that...  Ear plugs, loud nasty sex and get through the year...  Calling the cops will aggrivate the situation and it will turn into a full core melt down which will really suck.. Come to an agreement or suffer the kiddies... ;)

Hi Jerry,

I know this problem better than I ever wanted to.

My previous apartment was a wonder in terms of noise from above. For example, the Easter night that I was treated to LOUD guitar and singing and the pounding of feet in rhythm to the music - a whole tribe of feet. Oy!

Those tenants eventually moved out only to be replaced by a single dude with size 30 feet that weighed 40 lbs each. Then there was the child from hell (Little Sir Running Foot) who came to visit on weekends and ran continuously overhead from one end of the apartment to the other for FIVE STRAIGHT HOURS! I kid you not.

Complaints to the property manager solved nothing, because here the noise bylaws specify no undue noise between 8 pm and 7 am. Not that anyone cares apparently.

Even after having security people come to my apartment on four separate occasions and witness Mr Noisy's antics, even after logging every incident of noise, nothing could be "legally" done it seemed.

My only solution was to transfer to a top floor apartment when my lease ran out.

Bad move.

For six months I had a leaky ceiling to deal with because they couldn't find the source of the leak. Once I threatened legal action however, they suddenly found the source no problem. Still I have noisy neighbours either side of me. When my lease is up end of January I will be long gone. You can be sure I will try to choose my next place a lot more carefully.

My point is this: many people in this world are just too self centred to notice there are other people living on the planet. I find dense foam earplugs invaluable.

I wrote a pm to Jerry because I have personal first hand experience in this matter. In NYC because of the illegal aliens there is a 1% vacancy- this means you just can't get an apartment . The landlord is dying for you to move as then they can raise the rents more than the allotted % for a a lease holder.
Despite the laws no one get involved because they feel you are over reacting.
You have to get witnesses. Like anyone  wants to spend a night of hell listening to the woman upstairs sloppily clean her house at 2 in the morning.
I also have a $300 fine sign outside my window and everyday it is a barrage of noise . The EPA says call the precinct and the precinct says it is EPA.
I guess we can blame this on the French too

Jerry,  I feel for you guys.    I know what this is like, having lived in apts. for many years in the 70's and 80's....then, after my "AIDS downfall", I'm back in apartments again!

The neighbors below me are sleazy, and lord knows what they are up to.   There are 4 or 5 adults living in a 2-bedroom 1-bath...cars come and go at all hours....they are on disability or welfare or both, yet they stay out somewhere until 3 or 4 a.m., then come in and start their fighting and banging.

Good luck, hope it gets better.

Hugs,
Alan

Cant you just put them to sleep?

Seriously though, if they dont quiet down I would make a point of knowing where the kids bedroom was, and what their bedtime is and make sure I wake them up at all hours of the night.  If DADDY dont sleep peacefully, then neither do the little bastards upstairs!!!

And this is coming from a father of 2, who preaches other people are just as important as you are, and to respect others.

I guess I am blessed. I live in a 11 story apartment building and am on the 8th floor but it's quiet all the time. But in this building it is all one bedroom apartments and most of my neighbors are seniors.

Jerry,

It has been a while since we have had to deal with "loud and noisy neighbors" It was something I simply will not deal with !!! Whether they are in the same building, or right next door to us.

We had one guy next door to us, who was constantly remodeling his home. Electric saws, hammers going until midnight ( this is when I worked days) Finally enough was enough,  tried to reason with him, but he was just an asshole. So, I became one !!

Started calling the police, and the City permit division. Seems the guy had no permits for the work he was doing around the property. The noise came to an end pretty fast.

Another thing I can't deal wiith is barking dogs. We don't have that problem either, but I never hesitated to call the police to put an end to it either !!

Good luck, hope things will quiet down for ya--------Ray

My answer came via the free-standing, cottage condo. at least until I can figure out a single-family house in this market.  No shared walls.  No one above or below.  But as a writer, as only a writer could or would confess, I to miss what I am missing.  I did a great poem about the conversations between a next door neighbor and his mother, he on east coast time and her on west coast time.  Then there was the 'escort,' Brazilian tenant of mine, who had clients in his mirror image apartment each night.  When my bed backs on the shared wall and all the noises came through so that little needed to be imagined.  Then the guys in Chelsea who showered, then showered again and again and again.  (This in the new book.)  I finally realised that their 'model' agency was a play on words and so the showers marked that moment in the post activity.  Win

Well I called the property manager friday and told her about what all happened. I asked her if we could move to a top floor apartment and she said no, that we could not do that until we have been here a year. However she said that she was trying to move them to a bottom floor apartment. We will see what happens. She also told me she was going to be on vacation for the Thanksgiving holiday for a week. She told me to keep documentation of the times and dates that the noise happens and give it to her when she gets back and she will take care of it. But she has said she was going to talk to her about the noise and everything, but if she has it hasn't did no good. Well I guess thats something you have to deal with apartment living. But I think we pay far to much to have to deal with it. I wish I could have been here when this all happened, I was at band practice that night when it happened, because if I had of been here she really would have seen a bitch...LOL ;)

Jerry & Brad,

next time they are making too much noise, sneak down to the utility box and flip the switch and cut off their power.....

I'm tempted to go down and flip my neighbors' while they are "out for the evening" getting drunk, because I'm sure when they roll in at 3 a.m. it will sound like a herd of elephants.

I'm not sure child services would help in this case because there is no proof of negligence. Actually, the neighbors pulled a fast one on you by calling the Po-Po and filing a report on you. I would make your landlord aware of that fact, since she told you to write every thing down. Who has seniority when it comes to living in the building? I would think your landlady would make an exception and move you to another apartment or does she not care about your money you pay for rent? I would think she would say something to them, I would imagine if this goes on you will end up moving. I hope not but it looks as this situation may turn ugly. Good Luck.

It's kids being kids, for christs sake.
You can hardly expect them to tip toe around quietly.
Perhaps you should have been a little more thorough in your search for accomodation before signing a lease.

I have personal experience with these sorts of matters, too. When the whingeing old man who lived down below me used to bang on the floor from below if we were being too noisy. Our solution was to jump up and down on the floor longer and harder. Such the old whinger up, once and for all.
Be forgiving, be grateful, be optimistic

We hope that things will be better now but it seems like things have gotten worse. The police came in the apartment when they came and the officer heard the noise. He then went up there and told her that he even heard it, but it didn't help. But we will see, we are going to talk to our landlord about it. Also I have a friend thats a layer and I am going to get his opinion about the situation.....we will keep you posted about our noisey neighbords from hell...... :)

Couple weeks ago I treated my neighbors to mini Slayer/Sepultura/Korn concert to drown out the absolutely horrific sound of six or seven of their large breed dogs barking and howling ALL PHUCKING NIGHT LONG ! See none of these dogs we neutered or spayed and it being breeding season the poor bastard were just wailing in anguish inside the kennels. So after the third night of this shit, I dragged out my two 12" woofers and a couple 8" mid boxes and let rip some metal mayhem at 3.00am.

The cops showed up just about 30mins later after said neighbor called them and gave me a warning about the music, though they seemed a little more interrested in with why my neighbor was breeding so many large dogs in a residential area without a license. Hmmmmm  ;D

I really feel for you guys, hope things get better for you.

thank you Rhino, I wish we could do something like that but I know if we did that we wouldn't only have her complaining but everyone else in the building... I just think we are damned if we do and damned if we don't.
                               Thanks..... :)

Bad bad memories. Unfortunately in this world there are people so self absorbed that they are completely beyond reason. I hate to say it, but your only solution may be to get out and into an adults only building.

That's what I'm trying for come February.
