vaginal oral with cold sore

hi guys,
last week i got drunk and done something really out of character. i ended up with a sex worker and had protected vaginal sex but went down on her for about a minute. i know it was stupid but thats what drinking does. anyway i had a one of them cold sores, the ones that keep re-opening when they are healing, and am now worried sick that i could be infected with hiv.
it only caught my attention the next day when i put my hand to my mouth and saw a tiny bit of blood on my hand from the sore re-opening as i had dry lips. i dont think that it was bleeding that night but again im not a 100% sure .its from then on that im a paranoid wreck.
i no you guys answer a lot of questions on this subject but i have yet to find one that focus's on a sore on the lip.
any advice would be greatly appreciated

Buddy, you are essentially worrying unnecessarily about HIV. Your saliva forms a very effective natural barrier against the transmission of HIV. There is no need for testing nor for further concern on your part.

The only confirmed risks for the sexual transmission of HIV are unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse. Use condoms consistently for those activities and you will be well protected.

It's not clear from your remarks if your "cold sore" means you have herpes. If you do have herpes you should not be having sex while it is active because it means you can pass it during that time very easily to someone else.

It is also true that it's not a good idea to have casual sex when you have been drinking excessively. That condition makes it less likely you will follow the guidelines for safer sex so avoid that in the future.

As far as HIV is concerned there is no cause for further concern on your part about this recent incident.

i dont have herpes. i have been checked before this incident. this just got me worried because i wasnt sure if the sore was open or not. So your saying even do it was on my lip and could of been bleeding a tiny bit im still not at risk?

No, you were not at risk.

If you do not have herpes, then you should stop calling the sores on your lips "cold sores". Cold sore is the common name for herpes on the lips.

However, if the sores on your lips start out looking like small blisters, then you most likely do have herpes. The tests for herpes commonly return false negative results. If the sores are more like cracks, then you probably need to be using lip-balm to keep your lips from drying out to the point of cracking.

Here's what you need to know in order to avoid hiv infection:

You need to be using condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, every time, no exceptions until such time as you are in a securely monogamous relationship where you have both tested for ALL sexually transmitted infections together.

To agree to have unprotected intercourse is to consent to the possibility of being infected with an STI. Sex without a condom lasts only a matter of minutes, but hiv is forever.

Have a look through the condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use condoms with confidence.

ALTHOUGH YOU DO NOT NEED TO TEST SPECIFICALLY OVER YOUR RECENT CONCERNS, anyone who is sexually active should be having a full sexual health care check-up, including but not limited to hiv testing, at least once a year and more often if unprotected intercourse occurs.

If you aren't already having regular, routine check-ups, now is the time to start. As long as you make sure condoms are being used for intercourse, you can fully expect your routine hiv tests to return with negative results.

Don't forget to always get checked for all the other sexually transmitted infections as well, because they are MUCH easier to transmit than hiv.

Use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

maybe i do have herpes? or maybe it was cracked lips because i recently only moved to a hot country and it usually tends to happen me. but i do feel sick and am probably just making myself this way. once you say it is not risk even with an open sore it makes a whole lot of difference.

Whatever is causing the problem with your lips, you should refrain from giving oral when you are having this problem. If it is herpes, you will be giving that person herpes - and genital herpes, whether it is type 1 or type 2, - is not a pleasant thing to have. In fact, it hurts like hell.

The reason I'm telling you that you shouldn't be giving oral with sores on your lips (even if it's not herpes) is not because of hiv, but because of the possibility of getting a bacterial infection.

You have not had a risk for hiv infection. Remember to always use condoms for anal or vaginal intercourse and have regular, routine sexual health check-ups, and you will continue to avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple!

Hi guys, im back again. i dont mean to be persistant but its been 4 weeks now and ive got what i think is a swollen lymph node in the centre of my forehead. not the most attractive sight! i have 3 questions if you guys wouldnt mind answering
1: what size does a lymph node have to be to be considered swollen? and is this a common place for 1 to surface during hiv infection?
2:do you truley beilieve i couldnt have got infected this way no matter what situation my mind can think up with the cut/sore on my lip?

We don't analyze symptoms here. A swollen lymph node is something to discuss with your doctor not to handle yourself. In that area it might be a cebacious cyst. But go to your doc and get it clearified. And keep your hands off of it.

HIV is not your problem whether you believe it or not.

Leave your lymph nodes alone. Really. If you are concerned you should discuss your concern with your doctor.

You were not at risk and you are completely off base in attributing them to HIV. Really.

People do not get swollen lymph nodes on their cheekbones or foreheads. Go see a doctor to find out what is going on.

You did NOT have a risk for hiv infection. Whatever is going on with your face has nothing to do with hiv.
