Dentist 'diagnosed' leukoplakia...
« on: February 06, 2008, 12:38:36 pm »
Hello to everyone.

I'm a bit confused at the moment. I went to the dentist who has said that there is early leukoplakia on one side of my tongue and plus 'hair' running along the other side. I have (foolishly!?) looked at pics on the net, and there does appear to be some similarities.

However, I have tested negative 3 times (4, 16 & 52 weeks, all AB+AG) since my exposure (insertive vaginal sex).

With my eyes welling up, I went to my local GUM clinic, where the specialist nurse and health advisor told me that I had nothing to worry about. They did not check my tongue , though.

What is your opinion on this? I am a non-smoker. I have read many times that this is only found in those with HIV (only on rare occassions in immunocompetent people). Could it be something else? Do other things look like OHL?

Thanks for the advice.

Whatever is going on with your tongue has nothing to do with HIV. You have absolutely tested negative for HIV.

If the problem persists check it out further with your doctor. You've gotten a bad and unwarranted scare from your dentist. THIS IS NOT AN HIV SITUATION. Really. Period.

I wouldn't say that the Dr. "Dentist"gave you foolish info. I don't see at all that he said it was any indication of HIV. I suspect you looked it up on the Internet and self diagnosed yourself. Don't do that. Symptoms or the lack of is no way a way to diagnose HIV infection. As you've been told, you have tested conclusively negative. Next time you have a concern, ask your doctor or dentist if you don't understand.

Well, no he didn't state that it was a sign of HIV, but he told me to go to my GP and my GP told me to re-test.
And yes, I was aware of it as a factor of HIV, but definitely didn't 'diagnose' myself. I know symptoms or lack of are no way to diagnose, but when something so closely associated with HIV "crops up" (if indeed it does), it can scare the hell out of you.

Thanks again for the help.

Yah, well no matter what your mind is scaring you with to the contrary, you have reliably tested negative for HIV. You ARE HIV negative.

Thanks for all the advice. Well, the 'early leukoplakia' has gone, but white patches (ulcers, I think) keep coming and going in the same place every few days, and have done for the past few weeks.

Last year I got a hell of a lot of colds (above 9), but recovered quickly, and some strange rashes on the soles of both my feet (that lasted for a few months - looked a bit like ringworm does on the rest of the body, but not like athletes foot) and my trunk (the derm didn't know what the latter was).

Before last year I was pretty healthy. Could I have just had an unlucky year, health-wise?

With all these things, are the tests still conclusive?

Thanks again.

You have been told your symptoms have nothing to do with HIV.

You are HIV negative. Period. End of story.

If you continue to have troubling symptoms of any sort that's something for you to discuss with your doctor. This is NOT an HIV situation.

Period.

Thanks for all the help and advice. It's much appreciated.

One final thing (I know, you've heard that one before!):

For those in the UK, do GUM clinic tests look for Group O (tested at the Mortimer Market Centre in London, if that makes any difference)?

Errol,

The tests used in the UK will find any sort of hiv. Trust me on this; you ARE hiv negative! It's time to get on with your life.

Hi,

Just a question, more than a worry (at the moment!), if I may?

I have been reading some of your posts about fingering with a cut not being a risk factor, and found JK's explanation of the reasons for this really interesting. So, would the same apply for tiny scratches on the shaft of the penis ( say, 2/3rds of the way down, with the head being covered by a condom)? This is a new "exposure" not related to the above incident.

Many thanks

Errol

Errol,

Yes, the same would apply. They also would likely have been covered by the condom.

Keep using those condoms, correctly and consistently, and you will avoid hiv infection. It really is that simple. Read through all three condom and lube links in my signature line so you can use them wth confidence.

Well, the worry has returned - after so many negative tests. All I can see is a "before and after" pattern. The original tongue problem turned out to be Geographic Tongue - and it has been flaring up constantly, first beginning a year or so after my 'incident'.

I have read loads of posts on places like The Body, where people never seem to test positive on the antibody tests. Do I need a viral load test / PCR?

There are just too many bizarre symptoms since this "exposure".

Errol,

You don't have hiv and therefore do not need PCR testing. PCR testing is not a diagnostic test - it's used to monitor people who have hiv. You do NOT have hiv and that fact has already been established with your negative antibody tests.

Hiv isn't the only illness that causes symptoms. You need to work with your doctor to find out what is causing yours. Whatever it is, it is NOT hiv. You do not have hiv!

If you cannot accept your negative hiv results, then you should seek counseling as Rodney suggests.
