Do I need to test again?
« on: February 06, 2008, 03:41:12 pm »
I had vaginal intercourse with SW 12 weeks ago and condom broke. I've done the following tests:

1) 5 weeks - home antibody test HIV-1 - NEGATIVE
2) 6 weeks - PCR RNA HIV-1 test - NEGATIVE
3) 7 week - rapid antibody HIV-1, HIV-2 - NEGATIVE
4) 10 week - PCR RNA HIV-1 test - NEGATIVE
5) 10 week - ELISA HIV-1, HIV-2 - NEGATIVE

I also did complete STD panel at 7 weeks, and all came out NEGATIVE.

I do know that symptoms do not mean anything, but I still got some. Not only that, but also my wife has many symptoms, but she does not know about the exposure.

I am not IV drug user, and have no transplants.

I've read all the info available on the internet, and it is very controversial.

I was wondering if I need to continue testing at 3 and 6 months?

Only the very, very smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so more than 6 weeks after a possible exposure. With your list of negative results at up to 10 weeks I certainly expect you will continue to test negative. I do recommend that you re-test for a final result at 13 weeks, which is the CDC recommended testing point.

With only a single incident in which you  were protected until the condom broke, your risk level was absolutely minimal to begin with.

As for your wife's symptoms, if they persist she should see her doctor. You are probably in such an HIV jitters mindset that anything she reports would feed your fears.

I don't see this as an HIV situation. Just take that final test for confirmation.
